My son has an xbox 360 one of the slim ones, a couple of days ago the speaker on the supplied (microsoft headset) went AWOL so he can't hear his mates talking. Went out on Saturday and bought an equivalent replacement but both the ear and mic volumes are very low, such that his mates say they can't hear him. You can't seem to adjust mic volume/sensitivity of the dashboard and talking to the shop that I got it from they say it's just the quality of the cheap components (helpful!)

So what do the PH world recommend for him. I would like something open so that he can still hear people nearby talking (single earpiece/mic?), and something that is just going to work from the off.

Plenty of choices , how much do you want to spend .
I used xbox ones but as you say not over good , moved on to turtle each xlc ( about £15 ) good on a budget , but now have turtlebeach x11's, very good and comfortable (£30 'ish if you shop around)
Adjustable game sound and chat on separate channels so you can always hear friends and game sounds .

How about the Tritton AX 180's? they get much better reviews, or at least more consistently good than the Turtle Beach

Got my son a turtle beach x31 wireless headset at the weekend, £60 and seems a sturdy bit of kit.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

With something like the X11, do you play the game sound through the headset as well as the chat, and can you still hear other room noise. My reasons for asking are:-

1) He's still fairly young (10) and I don't want him damaging his hearing by playing it too loud and too long!
2) His mum still wants him to respond when she shouts upstairs!!

I've had Turtle Beach X4's for more than 4 years and they haven't gone wrong yet. These are the older model of the X41's that are now available. If you or your son play FPS games then you can actually gain an advantage with the use of them.
