No HDMI on this 360, just component - it's actually one of the first XBox 360s which my brother bought in 2005, so it probably done well to last this long. It's already had the RROD too a few years ago and was sent to Germany to be fixed.Assuming my eyes don't go first I could try using the AV cable if I've still got it...

Exact same thing happened to me - noticed the weird chessboard look, switched it off and on, RROD.
Towel trick worked for a day or 2 then was fooked - lasted me 3 years - was annoyed, but I suppose if a laptop lasts me 3 years it is doing well, bought myself one of the new, shiny, 250gb built in wireless jobbies now

Got a Megadrive & N64 which still work 
Must be lack of moving parts & heat generated - all the CD-ROM based consoles I've had in the past (PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn) have either died or suffered problems as they got older...

You can fix it for about £5...I fixed my first one by going to B&Q, getting some screws and washers, then doing away with the x-clamps on the heatsinks. If you unscrew the stanchions on the heatsinks, they leave tapped M5 holes (iirc) which you simply screw the heatsink down using the aforementioned b&q screws. The trick is to find out where the chip has lifted and put more tension on that corner.
