A ps3 and 360 question

The 360 used to come without Blu-ray, but now comes with it, I believe? What happens with games during development for both platforms, and what about old 360's and their owners?

I seem to remember reading that Bethesda would have made oblivion more detailed, had they been able to for the ps3, but had the constraints of the 360's no HD to think about at the time.

What is happening as regards storage space used on modern games which are released on both platforms? I'm asking, wondering about skyrim.

It doesn't and never will in its current incarnation.

Xbox has never come with Blueray. When the Blueray vs HDDVD battle took off Microsoft backed HD-DVD, that failed.

PS3 is the only console to provide Blueray.

What would they ave done for the pc version?

Apart from a couple of crap games with uncompressed audio has anything actually made use of a blu ray?

I have games for the 360 that span multiple disks now , the space could well be used, but only for large games.

Neither console is up to pushing the kind of textures/resolution that you would need BR for, considering there only running at 720p

Does multiple DVDs not suggest something with more storage would be required to get it on a single disk? Such as, hmmm, let me think, Blueray?

Blu-Ray (no "e") is not just about capacity. It's also about transfer rate.

If one game in hundreds needs more space then no.

As for transfer speed the 2x bluray drive in the PS3 is slower on average than the DVD drive in the 360. If you need faster then install it to the HDD, which is where most games/consoles are going now anyhow.

I stand corrected. I thought BR was a faster spinner as well as a denser pattern of bits.

(I agree about installing to the HD. The vagaries of my 360's drive's reliability make it somewhat necessary to avoid games halting halfway through)

I think the 360's dvd is 20x, the PS3's BR is 2x , it gets complicated as the bluray is constant rate the 360's is variable, then you delve into disk formats and encryption etc (microsoft have just modified the disk format for more space, and its all propriety stuff).

Overall the 360 was supposed to have the faster read (on average) but then you've got this noisy spinning disk drive all the time...

There are quite a few PS3 games that are 20-30GB or more.

There is also no capital "R" on ray - it's "Blu-ray"... The e was dropped in order to file for a trademark.

Now I thought the 360 only had a DVD drive, I posted as I heard (incorrectly it seems!) the 360 had a Blu-ray drive.

From what I remember reading, years ago, ps3 and PC games are limited graphically, in order to make one game which visually is similar on all three systems. The number of caves in oblivion which feature the exact same small raised platform of rock formations is... Irksome.

I was a bit surprised when I heard the 360 had adopted BR, it's a bit late in the game for that, due to the established user base (sorry, stating the obvious I know).

Someone has probably confused the rumour with one for the next generation Xbox. I’d be very surprised if that doesn’t have Blu-ray and since it is coming in 2012-2013, the chances of the 360 getting BR are zero.

I'd be very suprised if MS put a Blu-ray drive in their next console, firstly it's basically their competitor's format which they lost out to in the BR/HDDVD wars so there'll be little appetite to pay Sony et all royalties for every disk produced.

The other reason is that , when asked that very question recently, MS said that digital downloads are the future, not optical disks of increasing size. My best guess is that they'll forego any type of optical drive on the 720 and invest the money saved on an even bigger hard drive - say, 1TB - then get everyone downloading and installing to that.

I'd guess at a new xbox towards the end of next year(Sept or so) , perhaps march 2013. No way will they wait till 2015.

I doubt they will include a bluray drive but they might. Digital download is all well and good but theres a lot of prospective buyers out there who dont have internets enough to download 10gb + games.

It will have a large HDD and will be an entertainment hub , multiple dvd's can be installed to the hdd.

I wouldnt totally discount a BR drive tho.

New xbox will be able run games at 1080p at 60-120hz for proper 3dtv gaming, so I;m guessing 4-6 beefed up cpu cores (powerpc/in order again), dx11 gpu not quite as good as the best pc ones now, but with some tricks , 2gb ram, 250gig+ hdd etc.

People get confused by the '10 year lifespan' talked about. This does not mean it will be the companies premier console for 10 years, but made/sold for 10 years. Sony are still selling the ps2 especially to south america/middle east etc.

A few months ago MS started using a higher capacity DVD for their game discs, but it looks like the extra space is a separate section on the disc for security, not for extra game data. There was a system update for it and some early 360s don't like the update/discs.
