Last weekend Mrs Fun Bus got a text from her brother offering me his PS3 with ten games (including GT5) for £150. I took no persuading and it arrives tomorrow. I was all set to buy a new PS3 just for GT5 so I think I've a good deal even if it is used.

Now. I'm new to all this - the last console I had was a PS1. I'll have a wired connection to my router which I think is preferred? What else do I need to know - I can have an online account and play games with others can't I? With it being a used PS3 should I do anything differently?

I have of course done all the usual Google searches but always welcome the advice from people on here. Thanks in advance.

Obviously a wired connection is better than a wireless one, but I've not personally had any problems on wireless. Yep, you can create a PSN account and play against other people online, including racing other PHers driving There's not really much else that you need to know.

Is it the older 'fat' PS3 or the newer slim PS3? The older ones are more prone to failing than the newer ones.

It's a fat one. Not sure how old it is or how much use it has had - I'm possibly being brave but I trust the source!

It's only GT5 I'm interested in to be honest. The amazing graphics coupled with online racing against others clinches it for me.

You've already got GT5 so all you need to do now is get MW2 and Black Ops and then your sorted for ages.
I've got tons of other games I've hardly played but I play mainly on them ones, it's all about the online gaming these days.

You can create a online gamertag for free and play online for free aswell unlike the Xbox.
So create an account then drop your gamertag in a few of the PH topics of the games you own and start having a laugh with us PH guys. You won't regret it. Just watch out for that Rob_Gtr he's a strange one wink

I have had 3 PS3's - 2 fat ones which both died and now a thin one which is nice and quiet... not to worry you about reliability or anything hehe

If you are sure you only want to play GT5 then that's fair enough, but there are a lot of excellent games from all sorts of different genres that might be worth looking into, the big one obviously being Call of Duty. There are big PH groups online on both GT5 and CoD, you should have no problem filling up your friends list and finding people to shoot/race with.

If you want the best out of GT5 then you will want to get a steering wheel, if you got a proper wheel then you would be looking at probably another £150, but I race with a pad and it's fine.

Out of interest, what are the other games you got with the console?

Be wary of Devilstreak also, he has an unhealthy obsession with videos of filth in the deepest darkest realms of the internet. The video is impressive, admittedly...

I'd highly recommend a wheel if your main stay is gt5. My logitech dfgt is excellent.

People will obviously recommend COD. But give battlefield bad company 2 a go. youtube might help you choose. Have fun!

CoD MW2.
CoD World at War.
GTA Episodes from Liberty City.
Fallout New Vegas.
Red Faction Guerrilla.
Army of Two.

I've also a PS Move and the games:

Kung-Fu rider.
The Shoot.
Eyepet Move edition (WTF is that all about?).
PS Move starter disc.

Nice. I don't have many of them, just MW2, WaW and Episodes... but both MW2 and Episodes are excellent games. It may be worth picking up GTA4 second-hand to go with Episodes though. You might find playing online on the CoD games is a little tricky at first, everyone has played them for yonks now and people are pretty amazing at it. They are an excellent showcase of what can be done in terms of multiplayer though, it really is a great experience.

LA Noire, Little Big Planet and the Uncharted series may be worth looking into, they have gained excellent reviews. If you like free-roam driving, then Test Drive Unlimited 2 is good, although the handling and physics are awful and is a bit tacky... in terms of just blatting around an island in a range of supercars it is quite enjoyable.

Most stuff should be cheap if you pick it up second hand.

If you don't buy Uncharted 1 or Uncharted 2 you're missing out on the best ever games on a playstation console. Number 3 coming later this year.
And also get God of War 3 for its epicness!!! Oh and Heavy Rain if you like a thinking mans game.

Get Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Yes, set up a Playstation Network Account and you can go on-line gaming. THe PS3 can also hold your photos and be used as a slideshow on the TV, and it can hold music and be used as a Wifi Hifi.......

As it is used you may need to delete the previous account? Depends on how clean it comes - it may have saved games on it too...

I formatted the hard drive and set it back up from scratch. PS Network account also set up! (Fun-Bus).

Oh, and guess what my first (used) purchase was on GT5?!

GT5 is overrated imo, I waited years and years for something that isn't mindblowingly awesome boxedin

EK9 Civic Type-R was mine, a popular choice. Nice when race-modded too.

Yeah love mine. Seems to have a much higher top speed than other cars of the same PP. Good for some shock wins online, thats for sure.
