Our PS3 has just stopped reading discs frown, and I wondered if anyone had any advice on what to do. It starts up fine, will play stuff already downloaded, just won't read discs.Tried games and Blu-Rays but to no avail. Tried a reset, also to no avail. Any suggestions as to what I should do now ??

Cheers everybody.

Sorry to say it, but it's probably fked.

My old one stopped playing game discs, although it did play DVDs and Blu-rays, and downloaded games still worked. Oddly, older games worked fine, but newer games just wouldn't play. I had to buy a new one in the end.

Ring Sony's technical support for the PS3. Usually they are pretty good.

Needs a new laser. Costs about £100 but if you take it to a console repair place they shouldn't touch your data.

Lasers are really easy to change yourself, the old fat PS3s especially are a doddle to take apart. Do a bit of googling to find out how to do it and what laser you need (a few different types) you should be able to get it up and running for around the £50 mark
