Bit of a noob question, but...

..I'm a bit out of step with what good racing games are available for the PC. My current driving game is Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2, but I want to get something for my new PC, and use the Guillemot/Thrustmaster Ferrari Force Feedback wheel I have.
There's a few names I know, like Forza, NFS, and I think rFactor? But I don't really know what these games are like... What I'd like is a simulation that's accurate, but not anal about getting the last degree of toe-in or camber just right, IYKWIM. I'd like to be able to modify and develop cars as well - I think there's something out there that'll let you put new engines in, and that sounds pretty damn cool.
Any hints/tips/pointers would be great!

You cant go wrong with Rfactor, there are loads of mods (new cars + tracks etc) out there for it as well, some better than others ! Shameless plug : I had a go at making an Rfactor mod with a few friends, Touring car legends... 80s group A saloons.
Its very easy to play around with Rfactor in terms of modifying car files changing hp and torque curves etc once you have got the hang of how the various files affect the game.
Other quality PC racing games would be GTR2 or Race 07
These are based on the same engine as Rfactor.
I wouldnt bother with NFS or anything by Codemasters etc but thats personal preference.
I racing is meant to be very good as well, but you have to pay as you play rather than own the software outright. for this reason I have not purchased this game.

The game you're thiking of is probably Forza, it lets you upgrade and develop the car with different parts, including engines and drivetrains from other cars. Forza and Gran Turismo are only available on console though games like F1 2010/11, Dirt3 and Shift2 are also available on pc and look miles better too.
PC racers tend to lean more heavily on simulation, a little more difficult to get into but once you do they are much more enjoyable in my opinion. rFactor, the Simbin titles and iRacing are amongst the best out there.
Personaly I'd recommend rFactor. It's very cheap and with the right mods it looks and plays brilliantly, rFactror 2 is due out soon too. iRacing has the best graphics and handling but it's subscription based and can get very expensive.
