I was thinking - and this may exist already somehere...about a FPS style multiplayer with a twist...

I think I would make it that it would start with something like Battlefield, but it would be on a medieval basis and scale.

you would have swords and shields and be part of 100+ strong armies, capturing castles or defending them, rebuilding walls and moats and defending or capturing generals that your general could decide what to do with - all in real time of course i.e. swap for re-inforcements or global power ups or just kill the opposing general.

you could be in "squads" or battalions and it would take team work to defeat the opposition...

How far realistically are we away from 50 v 50 or 100 v 100?

any thoughts? I think it would be cool to do proper hand to hand combat if it were possible and generate bonuses like a catapult or crossbow or bigger shileds or cavalry...

I'm bored at work....

50v50 and 100v100 has already been done, read up on a game called Planetside. They're making a sequel to it now, but your medieval ideas haven't really been put into practice yet outside the likes of the Civilization games.

Natural Selection was a half life mod that incorporated a commander playing an RTS type game with real players as the units. It was Aliens vs Marines though. Build and defend a base was part of the marines job.

There have been quite a few sword and shield multiplayer.

Quite like the idea - would be like knife fights in BF2 but that's all you can do. I do hate it when you pull out a knife and the other guy just shoots you with an automatic rifle. grumpy

No, no, no. Battlefield with WoW scale would be the winner.

The OP, maybe I was a little over-excited.

I like the idea of large scale war games, maybe the battle goes on for weeks and it could be based on taking land ?

Sounds better in my head but instead of quick games you could see the progress of a war and do your part when you can, fighting for zones.

A virtual world war?

Exactly, imagine Battlefield, but instead of being confined to just flying around one town or base you could fly on to other parts of the country.

It would be immense.

Ive thought this many a time. I always thought it would be good based off a Total war engine though.
The single player would be you are a soldier/prince/general whatever in that army and you have a roleplaying element to it.
Multiplayer would simply be bots being replaced by real players in your units etc.

I know mount and blade is some of the way there but I only see it as being 10-15% where I imagine it could be.

It would be good but has the potential of being highly addictive, I am going to be bad enough with MW3 smile
