Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago my PS3 stopped reading discs of any type, it doesn't even show them under the appropriate section in the menu.

I have restored it, changed the lens, checked all connections and cleaned it out but it still isn't reading any discs. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It is an original 80GB model.

Cheers
Liam

Does it not read DVDs?

If it reads no discs at all I'd say the controller board on the bluray has expired. Quite a rare failure, usually the bluray part of the drive fails and you remove the controller and replace the drive, thing is, the controller must stay with the original ps3. If the board is fked you have a really big problem! Off to Sony with it!

Have just double checked and it doesn't read any type of disc. Will Sony have an issue with the fact I have opened it up? Guessing not do to the age.

They don't normally have a problem unless the insides are all broken up! I'm not sure what they'll do mind but I don't think there are any DIY fixes that will work in your case.

If its not under warranty, I doubt they would care.

Would it be cost effective to repair? If the BD controller board is married to the PS3 mobo, do they both have to be replaced?

I very much doubt it. You'll be looking at £100 plus at a minimum I reckon. Might as well save a few quid for a couple of weeks and buy a new system. About £160 these days aren't they, for a barebones deal?

It will make an appearance on eBay soon. Like has been said probably best to buy a new system. Wonder if the Best Buy closing down sale is any good. Doubt they will discount the PS3 though on the run up to Christmas.
