Hi everyone,

A friend and work and I have been discussing the possibility of have a proper Le Mans style race online. We have come up with a few ideas and if people can add any ideas they have to make it run better then please do. When all is sorted in this phase we can get a time and date to run it.

The ideas we have are (and these are as I remember/think of them, not in any order)

  • 1 hour race, I'll try to work out how many laps that would be for one of the LMP1 cars
  • Day, night, day race to mimic the 4pm start and finish of the real Le Mans
  • 16 drivers split into 2 groups of 8. Group one will be LMP1, group 2 GT style cars
  • Power and weight to be limited, not PP so people can change aero without punishment
  • Full tyre and fuel wear/use on
  • All aids available so people with pads can join in
  • Full damage with light penalties to try to keep racing fair and clean. But light self fixing damage will be fine if people thinks it's too big a lap to get to the pits with damage
  • Change of weather switched on if running light damage, off if full damage.
  • Every car to be different
  • Mics have to be on, with LMP1 and GT cars we need to be communicating about lapping the slower cars ahead.
  • Room to open 1 hour before race start for practice and qualifying.
So what do you lot think? Doable or not?

Thanks for any input in advance, would be nice to maybe get a Le Mans series going at a few tracks if this works.

Edit to add new rules and list of entrants!

Right, this is the list so far, will cap it at 12 to try to prevent the bug issue.

As there is a lack of interest in the LMP1 class I've changed it all to GT cars, so basically anything that is a race car that fits in the regs.
As a basic set of regs we have:
  • Full damage
  • Time and weather changes
  • GT class cars only, PP to be decided
  • No aids (definitely no bad aids)
  • Light penalties
  • Tyre wear and fuel depletion on
  • No boost
  • Real grip levels
  • 12 racers
  • For the race day, the room will open 1 hour before the race for practise. This will be limited to Racing Hard tyres for 30 mins. For the last 30 mins before the race start, Racing Soft tyres can be used to set a qualifying time.

I will open a room called 'PH Le Mans' on Wednesday night at about 8pm for anyone who wants to check some cars out online and have a chat about the race. From this I can figure out the PP limits so as many cars can enter as poss. I'd rather there weren't any duplications, so if people can think about the car they want to run and add it where GT is written in the box above.

I'll put this in the opening post too.

I would be up for it in a group 2 car, the LMP cars are a bit quick for me to enjoy. I reckon it should be light penalties with full damage but retain the weather changeability to make it exciting haha. Also, aids should be off IMO, its not too bad on a pad.

I do like the full damage and have been racing with it online for a while now, but it does mean lots of people quit the race if they have an accident and I'd like the 16 racers to stay for the full event. If everyone agrees to it I'd love to have it full damage.

once we have a full 16 we can sort out cars and times, 4 so far smile

People should drive carefully, its their own fault if they get damage. Obviously if it is caused by someone else then you can go nuts at the person responsible, but it shouldn't happen in the first place. What level would the group 2 cars be at? DTM-style?

I was thinking as long as it's a race car within the power/weight restrictions it doesn't matter. Anything from DTM, GT500, the American race spec cars (Viper, Corvette etc) to keep it as varied as possible. I prefer not to have duplicate cars racing, it looks odd to me smile

Ok cool, sounds good. Might have to take my Vauxhall Astra DTM car if it suits the limits that are picked.

I'll do some research with cars and times and stuff whilst (if!) this thread builds over the weekend. Should be able to get some info on lap times and power limits between the cars.

4 people in, 12 to go smile

Liking the sound of that, don't think I'm good enough to be left in charge of an LMP car, so would prefer GT class

If and when you pick a car for definite then add it to the list.

I've had a quick look for GT2 and it looks that about 600BHP and 1200KG covers most cars, most will have to be tuned and have ballast added but as you can't reduce weight with a dial like you can power it seems an easier way to keep cars similar.

Does the weight power restrictions work in the game like it does in my head? I feel with PP limits you can't fiddle with aero to have cars differ between corner speed and straight line speed but have the same power to weight. Or is it just better/easier with pp limits?

Haven't had time to look at LMP1 cars yet

I can lend cars out - going back to university, so I might as well let other people borrow them.

At the mo, I have a R10 TDi Stealth, mazda 787B Stealth, 2 Minolta Toyotas, Toyota TSO20, SLS AMG Stealth, Mclaren F1 Stealth, C6 Z06 RM, Quite a few JGTC/Super GT cars, all the DLC TC cars avalible, and a few other things that I have forgotten right now.

I've always wanted to do this. With regards to the GT1/2 cars why don't you use modified 458, Corvettes, MP4-12c's, DB9's etc that are actually GT1/2 cars. Modify them to about 600pp and you have realistic Le man's classes. May be even do a few of the cars to GT2 spec and drop the pp down a hundred or so. Shame you can't sticker them up like the epic Forza thread.

Thanks mate, appreciate the offer, but being stuck for cars isn't the problem, (think I have 2000ish, and at least one of everything).

I meant my ability to drive, I imagine those in LMP, in reflection can manage lap after lap the same, where as GT class would be a battle for who could care less (not meant in the sense of bashing every corner, using cars as brakes etc) more on the 'won't get shirty if you clip someone by accident' sense. Two classes so to speak smile

Could add a Lambo Mercielago, Ford Mustang GT, Ferrari Enzo Ferrari, and C6 ZR1, quite easily in that case...

Rather lend out LMP1 cars - safest class to race in. Your faster than everybody else...

Looks like I could be borrowing off you !!

The Minolta is quite driveable I find. Still slide it out of every second or third gear corner though...

I'm game to go with the crowd on these options but I wanted to keep the cars as race cars to keep the effect. Passing a tuned 458 in a LMP1 doesn't have the same feeling of Le Mans as passing a race car, even if it isn't normally associated with Le Mans.

The 2 classes of cars wasn't meant to be about driving ability, I thought it would be nice to have different battles for different places be affected by cars not involved with that battle. Adding to the race like tyre strategy, damage and the night/day transition. So don't be put off with the LMP1 class, I can't drive well but may take the Silk Cut Jag out.
