Any folks on here discovered Rise of Flight yet?

I'm just getting into it myself - it's a highly detailed, fun to fly, incredibly immersive and gorgeous looking WWI flight sim. The fully functional base game is free, and comes with 2 planes - a Spad and an Albatros. Further planes are available to buy from the online store, or (as I did) you can buy a boxed version with 8 planes straight out of the box.

I'm still flying around at the "can land safely most of the time" stage, and can land the occasional shot on target before being shot down in flames by the AI, but it's the most immersed I've been in a game since Grand Prix Legends. Hearing the wind rushing past the cockpit beats a speedometer any day!

A small screenshot, and a fan made mini documentary video to whet your appetites:

Foolishly didn't put a link in the original post! D'oh!

http://riseofflight.com/en

The free to download version is a full, uncrippled version of the game. The only difference is the number of flyable aircraft included smile

I downloaded this the other day but since I dont have a flightstick yet it's pointless to even attempt flying. Heard nothing but praise for it though, should be alot of fun.

This sim deserves a bump for the midweek crew!

I'm having a ball with RoF at the moment learning to throw these old crates about without falling out of the sky! Slowly getting there...! A very kind chap on the forums has also gifted me two planes (about a tenners worth) for posting in a newbies thread - there's a great community, and a very actively involved dev team who post regularly.

I have had this for almost 2 years, but never tried it properly - perhaps I should. I was put off flight sims by the awful IL 2 COD..

I've dabbled with this very briefly, but my 4 year old Macbook Pro really doesn't love running it biggrin

When I see games like this I'm almost tempted to rebuild my old gaming PC (it hasn't run in years)… almost. Then I remember the ballache and expense that goes with it, so back to my Xbox I go.

That said, I've got some mates coming round this weekend for a day or two of playing old games over a LAN (including IL2 – a firm fave!) Sad, we know…

I've a lot more spare time this year than the last 2 or 3 years, so I've put a gaming PC back together. Only cost £400 for the components, and fitted them all inside my old case - runs RoF just fine at decent settings.

I have a 360, but it's never quite worked for me as I was always into more complex games and sims - Grand Prix Legends, IL2, Live for Speed, Silent Hunter, Civilization, Sim City - that kind of thing. Consoles just don't do it for me...

I used to be hooked on things like Silent Hunter (3 and 4) and IL2, as well as loads of FPSes. Since I got it in 2006, however, my gaming has almost exclusively been on my 360, it's just far more convenient for playing with friends every night! I'm surprised I've made the switch too as I used to be the biggest PC gaming geek for most of my young life (sob!).

Also, it's sad but it looks like most of the investment in the games industry has gone the way of the consoles. With the piracy stats for PC releases such as Crysis 2 (see: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-03-the-m... ) PC gaming looks to have a bit of a bleak future. Which is a massive shame.

But it'll be good to get back into IL2 this weekend…

For you flightsimmers who also want a head tracking tool but don't have the £120 for a trackir, you can do the following

buy this camera for £17 delivered
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Playstation-Eye-Camer...

download cl eye software and facetrack noir

you will basicall ythen have a trackir interfaced headtracker that works with most games (il sturmovik, MSFS, RoF etc)
and it works extremely well even in low light conditions

It has to be this camera though, as others might need an IR refractor or be not up to the job resolution wise.

There are more PCs in the world than Xboxes, PS3s and Wiis combined, but the piracy stats don't agree with the amended figures if you add them up. If PS3s were the most numerous they would have the most pirated downloads same with Wii and Xbox. It's just numbers and stats, they can never tell the whole story. Most developers that I'm in contact with believe pirates would never buy the game anyway if they couldn't get it through an illegal download so there's no real revenue loss. Some people might download it to try it out and buy it if they like it but there's very few who will download an illegal copy instead of paying for it, which they could easily afford to do.

Indeed. And in addition to that, a number of friends who went the way of the Xbox/PS3 three or four years ago are coming back around again to the way of PCs.

The graphics are streets ahead, and things are getting easier and easier to set up. I remember spending entire evenings just trying to get a multiplayer game working, using weird modem strings and such like - it's just plug and play these days smile

Bump time - maybe a few people who might not see this thread otherwise might catch it again if its back on the front page, and get switched onto RoF.

It appears I'm slowly getting better at flying...! I can shoot down the odd plane, and land some of the more stable planes reasonably reliably. Flying the Sopwith Camel is still a bit of a lottery though!

More lovely screenshottery:

I used to have just about every flight sim going up to about 5 years ago, I got fed up with constant crashes and slow running despite having fast PCs and the best graphic cards.

When I saw the ROF utube videos and read up about it I ordered a monster spec PC from Chillblast, an i7 2600K overclocked to 4.5GHz , complete with a GTX 580 3Gig graphics card biggrin

I've been playing, well more like thrashing ROF, since it arrived on 13th of January.
In fact I haven't installed any other games on it, with all the graphic options maxed out it is stunning.

As timbob said originally it is a free download of the full game with just two planes, but be warned that you WILL buy more - in the half price sale last week I bought almost all of them.

Do you need a joystick to play this properly?

I don't think that there are any decent flight sims that you could play without a decent joystick with a hat for the views.
