Have had my PS3 since the day they were launched (can't even recall how long ago that was), it's one of the Fat ones.
Never had any problems with it until for some reason it switched itself off a few weeks ago, however i simply switched it back on & all was well. Not played on it for the last couple of weeks & just switched in on as per normal now & all was well until after about 5mins when again it beeped & switched itself off. This time however i can't switch it back on as it just beeps at me & reverts to a red flashing light.
I've heard that a recent System Update (mines set to auto update) has caused a few folk problems & that certain menu items have vanished & i did spot before it died that most of the film submenu (Lovefilm & iPlayer etc.) had vanished.
Any ideas on why my system could have died & more to the point what if anything can bring it back to life?

Does the light flash yellow a couple of times before starting to flash red?
If so you've got the YLOD.
The older fat consoles are more likely to get it, especially the launch 60GB models.
I think it may be fixable but I don't know much about it, think it may be a case of having to open it up and replace a couple of things + the thermal paste.
Probably worth a shot, console is completely dead otherwise.

I got a recon one from Sony for £130, It only lasted another 6 months. Their warranty is 3 months.
To get the disc out, Just smash it to pieces, It's great fun and helps release stress
Move is toss.

Hold down the eject button.

It should do a fan test, the fans will whir up (you'll hear this). Keep pressing eject and the disc should be spat out.

Alot more fun breaking it. Plus you can make a laser pen out of the blu ray drive

A lot of usable components in there. No point destroying because of one failure.This happened to me recently Paul, best off Taking it apart, heating the mother board in the oven for ten mins at Gas mark 6, let it cool for half an hour, put it back together, turn on and hey presto it works (for now) eject game then copy all data.
From there you have two choices, continue to use it until it dies again (which it will) or go to a game shop and trade it in for a new one (good deals to be had at the moment). The only problem with the latter is that someone somwhere will have the same problem a month or so down the line, depends if you can deal with the same guilt and approach Sony does, with the "not my problem" stance.

My PS3 suffered YLOD before Xmas (old fat one) and won't start up the first time. However I keep persisting and it eventually turns on after around the 8th time (sometimes it less sometimes its more). I did the thermal compound thing but it didn't work. Give it a go you have nothing to lose.
Cheers all, i'll have a crack at heating up the motherboard & see if that works as nothing to lose. I assume you mean the main PCB & it's obvious which board is the motherboard? (never opened the PS3 before).
I had auto update enabled so all my game save data should be safe in my PSN account & would just be downloaded to the replacement PS3. Either way i guess i'm best just replacing with a newer PS3 slim.
Anyone spotted any particularly great bundle deals? Fancy Battlefield 3 as my next game purchase so a bundle that through that in would be handy.

Got bored faffing around at the 1st stage of getting the cover off so the heat gun/oven option won't work as it all looks a bit of a mess now
Got my COD MW3 disc out ok & also the hard drive, although i can't see what use the hard drive could be, however it's saved.
Will go on the hunt for a new PS3 at the weekend. Very annoying as i'm sure the PS4 won't be far away & my original 60gb PS3 had served me so well for nearly 5yrs.

I sold my YLOD PS3 60GB original one on ebay, got £65 a few months ago. That will re-coup some of the costs.
