Microsoft said they would have at least a 10 year life span, the same as the PS3. That would push the new ones release well into 2015. I don't think it'll be an improvement anyway as they (the ones in the know, or the rumour mill) reckon it'll be more Kinect focused and gesture controlled, which in my view is a massive step backwards.

yeah, but with kinect you can step forwards and side to side as well...Why is it a step backwards anyway? It's not like the ONLY games on the market are dancing ones, or indeed ones you even need kinect for.
What was the biggest grossing game of all time? It was probably BF3 or MW3 I reckon. (probly MW3) And that has zero kinect support so far as I'm aware. So long as there are enough gamers who still want to sit motionless (but for their thmbs and forefingers) there will be games made to cater for that. It doesn't bother me if they go off making kinect games for kids though, that's actually a good idea to keep them healthy.

For the last 50/60 years people have been inventing things that can get a job done using the least amount of effort, now all of a sudden because there are a few fatties still alive after stomach stapling, we have to wave our arms around and shout like loons to get a machine to play a disc? pointless, kids these days should be forced at gunpoint to go and play outside and climb a tree or something equally as "dangerous" if parents want them to stay healthy, schools as far as I know still play Football, Rugby and all manner of sports. I would prefer to press a button and have the machine do what I tell it to first time (unless it crashes, of course)

The 10 year life cycle thing was set for both as mentioned, but it doesn't mean the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be the flagship console for both brands for a full decade though, the PS2 carried on for sale with new games coming out long after the PS3 launched in a Clio Campus sub-brand style.
Despite my earlier cynicism we're probably due an official announcement this year or next, along the lines of a snazzy logo for each, maybe a short non-playable demo and some very vague non-committal details on spec. Then over the next year or so they’ll trickle out tiny details, maybe a mock-up of what it’ll look like.
Ultimately there’s one simple fact that will give you a real idea of when they’re coming and what’ll they’ll do – they both need to be launched with a massive launch title, a new Grand Theft Auto / Grand Tourismo / Halo / Modern Warfare sized title – ideally a console exclusive one, but to do that they’ll have to give the developers a development console and whilst it’ll come with tonnes and tonnes of legal paperwork in regards to not leaking info etc – it always happens. These massive games take a minimum 12 months to develop, usually twice that, plus add in the time taken to learn the new hardware…

I like how one of the comments moaned that gaming is a waste of peoples lives. What do they think TV, magazines and fictional books are? The amount of time my brother spends watching hollyoaks, eastenders, emmerdale, coronation street and the likes is amazing. Just to jump on the '10 year life cycle' quotes - This is meant, that the console will still be having games released / focussed on etc for 10 years. This doesn't mean they wont release the new consoles before this; I think the aim is 8 after, so there is a 2 year overlap, or round about there...

This.The parts of the games journalism industry that are actually reputable and reliable have all been mentioning this for ages. Both Microsoft and Sony have stated that they are not prepared to be later to the market than anyone else. The Wii-U is coming this Christmas and both the competitors will be announcing their new consoles at the next E3. Got to get people excited enough about them to prevent jumping ship to Nintendo.
