The Portal games are essential playing IMO. The first is usually very cheap on Steam, and is only about 4 hours to play through. You'll know at the end whether you want to play the second or not.
Skyrim is meant to be good if you like that sort of epic RPG thing. If you do, it can be a massive timesink - a mate put in 100 hours in his first month with the game and is probably well past the 250 mark now. Good value if you'll get that much play out of it.

I do love open sandbox style level up type games. Especially if it has a medieval feel.
It doesn't get any more open world than Skyrim really. I generally prefer guns over swords (Fallout) but I put about 100 hours into Skyrim and it's bloody good. Also there are tons of mods if you are playing on PC for enhanced textures, stronger dragons, etc.Another game worth buying if you like RPG's is Dragon Age: Origins. Again it's massive and you can buy the Ultimate Edition (Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening and all nine content packs) for £20 on steam. That's well over 100 hours easy. Dragon Age 2 is the sequel and it's just "not bad" IMO.
If you don't like RPG's then you should avoid both of these because there's a lot of talking.

I have had both, and recently traded Skyrim in. Whilst I'm sure Skyrim is great for those that are into that genre, I just couldn't be arsed with all the withcraftery and s
t.
Whereas Portal 2 is a fantastic game that anyone can pick up and play. I'll keep it forever.
hmmmm might have to investigate Portal 2....tbh I'd never heard of Portal 1

Two different types of games so difficult to say. For my pennies worth I'll say Portal every day. Especially 2 though I do agree that you should play 1 first.
You will find these games are amazing, more so when you remember that the first one was just a quick game put together to show off the physics capabilities of valve new game engine. 2 is amazing in no small part due to Steven merchant voicing one of the main characters.
then when you have finished 2 there is the on-line co-op mode where much hilarity is to be had as you get a bit wrong and smash your friend into a wall, drop him in the water etc.....
They have even made it so you can play rock, paper, scissors with your friend.
These games are awesome simply a must have in all pc gamers collections and quite frankly you will keep realising that you have left it long enough and you have forgotten how to do the puzzles and you'll find yourself booting up the game yet again.
One word of warning if you buy these games then you will find the phrase " oh go on, just one more level" becoming part of your life.
