Problems creating PSN account

Recently got myself a PS3 and I'm attempting to sign up for the PSN - I've managed to create an account but not an online id - for some reason it always comes back with:

PSN said:

The Online ID must contain alphanumeric characters, can include underscores or hyphens and must be between 3 and 16 characters in length. The first character must be a letter of the alphabet

All the ID's I've tried meet this criteria but still no joy. The Sony Entertainment site is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard (their own Customer Service link 404s FFS!)

Any wise PH-ers able to help?

You can't have any spaces unlike xbox.
