I'm a latecomer to this series. Infact I only started playing it because CIV V is free on the OnLive Playpack.
What a game this is though! I started playing for what I thought would be half hour...lasted quite a bit longer than that. I love the fact that there is no campaign and you just get on with it.
Any other players?

Loved the Civ games, but wasnt too impressed with 5.
Maybe need to give it a go again.
This reminded me of an article i read the other week about a guy with a 10 year old savegame on Civ 1.

I'm stuck on Civ IV (bts) because I'm pretty sure my PC won't handle V, but plan to get it when I get round to getting new PC.
Will I like it?
Play it over OnLive? I do with most my games because I use a Mac. Will I like it?
I have decent internet so the graphics are good too. Obviously not PC standards but considering the game is being streamer I'd say its very good.
The problem I found with Alpha Centauri was I didn't instinctively know my way around the technology tree, the one in the Civ series makes more sense to me.
I've been a fan since Colonisation and the original Civ, though the colonisation revamp they did pased on Civ4 wasn't that great. Wasn't that impressed with the version that had corporate lawyers (Civ4?), but loved the version where you could also build underwater cities (Call to power?) Civ5 tends to be the standard one I go back to if I'm bored and fancy playing something, but I think I prefer elements of Civ3, in particular operating aircraft from carriers, and the ability to stack units on a tile.
Which was the one that sat ranged units behind skirmish units in combat within a single tile? I always felt that was a good way of doing the combat. Not sure if it was a standard version or a mod though.

God that was awful - I played it two or three times and gave up. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-12-10-ye...
Like a few here I've been enjoying Civ. since it was just 'Civilization'.
It's known as 'Time Waster x' by friends and myself and I know well the experience off loosing a day (or two) to it.
I had a real run of games a month or so back, trying to tick of the achievements, only to have a further 100 achievements added... GRRR! I find myself coming up with some very odd justifications for attacking a neighbor - I want to help you but to do so I will have to take these towns from you' or 'I want to attack these people but you wont give me access so I'll have to make a corridor for my troops to go through', normally followed by ' well look you only have two cities left I may as well finish you off'. Power corrupts!
It took me a while to get used to Civ.V but once you're into it, it's most excellent.
