Returning to PC gaming

After faffing around with the spec for ages me and my boys have finally got a half decent PC ordered up (Overclocked i5 3570K, Z77-D3H Board, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD7850 2GB). I defected to the charms of the XBox / PS3 some years back so, other than a dabble with Minecraft, I'm not that up on what "essential titles" we should be looking at on the PC, or on stuff like Steam or the Indie PC gaming scene.

Do you guys have any major recommendations? I'm thinking ARMA 2 and the DAY Z mod looks good, plus Civilisation V and maybe the latest Star Wars KOTR RPG.. Is Battlefield 3 worth getting even though we have it on the Xbox? Any other games that would show off the 7850 card and the higher resolutions available? We like most genres but open world FPS / sandbox type games particularly appeal.

Depends what type of games float your boat? For 1st person shot-em-up type games I would say BF3 without a doubt. From comments from others that have tried both formats the a good PC wins hands down
