Please explain the new Wii console to a dad...

The WiiU! Industry opinion is that it will be slightly lagging in power compared to Sony and Microsoft's next generation offerings, the next Playstation and the next Xbox, but Nintendo have great creative minds and the games on offer will be the most important thing.
It has a tablet-like controller, and like the Wii, is more aimed at the 'casual' gamer, rather than the more 'hardcore' audience of Sony and Microsoft.

This article says it better than I can. There is tonnes of info on the console itself on this site.

slightly? My understanding was that it'll just about be a match for the Current PS3 and XBox 360.

Yeah, vast amounts of generalising coming up, but the Wii graphics are a generation behind the Xbox/Playstation, so the Wii is similar to PS2, the Wii U will be about on the level with the current PS3 and 360. My understanding was that it'll just about be a match for the Current PS3 and XBox 360.
But the Wii had the remote controllers that you could move around so that was their advantage until PS Move and Kinect. Wii U has the air remote with a screen in it to move things on, MS have jumped on that straight away with the 'Smartglass' update in the autumn that will let you use a touchscreen phone or tablet (Windows, Android or iOS) as the second screen with your 360, PS3 will have the crossplay with Vita. The Wii U will have the second screen in the box though, without having to have extra handhelds or tablets.
