How to remove a disc from a dead PS3?

Today was a very sad day, my PS3 got the so called "yellow light of death" and is now dead. When you turn it on, about 3 seconds later the yellow light flashes and then it shuts down and shows a blinking red light.

Now, in it's final hours the console swallowed a disc (flatmate said it died in the middle of a game) and we haven't been able to get it out despite our best efforts.

I have tried the "fan cycle" thing, where you turn it on holding the eject button, tried tapping the eject button, but nothing happens.

Short of breaking the fker open with a hammer, what can I do? I don't fancy sending it away to get fixed and rescued as my flatmate is bringing his PS3 up this weekend.

Any help would be great!

keep going until the disc drive is removed then pop the drive open.

Just noticed it has these silly torx screws and I don't have a suitable screwdriver. Lets hope the local hardware store has them in stock, or the drill will be coming out.

The torx screw was exactly the reason I just smashed it to pieces!

I sat down with all fiddly screwdrivers ready to do it properly, but didn't have a torx. Disc was out in 5 minutes and I was at the shop buying a new Ps3 5 minutes after that

Frankly it's now a couple of kilos of dead plastic, set about with with screwdriver until the reach the disc, what the worst that could happen, break it more?

Sadly not, mine is an old 60GB PS3, one of the very first ones! Thanks anyway

I have bought some multi tool thing that has lots of torx screwdrivers on them so hopefully all will be fine! I am quite interested to see what the insides are like, even if I don't understand any of it! I will try and take apart as much as I can properly, and maybe even put it back together.

Hammer is at the ready though.

They're really simple to take apart and put back together. I used a youtube guide the first time. It came apart 4 more times after that before I threw in the towel

Very easy to take apart, min your fingers or thumbs on the DVD case though! It's bloody sharp!

Success! Disc retrieved, and the PS3 still acts the same as it did before I took it to bits so I don't think I ruined anything too major



Getting that plastic cover back on correctly is a right PITA though.
