Seriously, chose a skill and type of fighting and concentrate on building those up. Blacksmithing to increase the effectiveness of your weapons, levelling up level up a particular fighting style, one handed or two handed and stick to it. Sneaking skills can easily be increased by stalking deer or creeping into houses without being seen as it can if you meet any bandits (ones on fortresses) get them to fire on you then die until they stop looking for you. That'll increase your skills. Increase Archery by shooting wolves, deer and bandits at a distance. There's lots more but they are some good basics to help you survive.
Tip, don't bother buying or improving armour too far as - from the Wiki - "Physical damage reduction is capped at 80%. This occurs at 567 displayed armor rating when wearing all four pieces of armor or 667 when not wearing any pieces of armour."
So improving armour beyond 567 is a waste of resources/money or levelling bonuses. You will be injured as much at 567 as you would be at 5000+. I think there's one for weapons as well.
