Star Citizen - PC Gaming is Back!
Discussion
Hey guys,
Not sure if you guys have seen this.
The guy who made Wing Commander is asking for pledges to a new Space Sim, the idea is to show the industry and gaming population that the PC is far from dead and can produce stuff that only consoles can dream of. He so far has achieved a $500,000 goal on Kickstarter in under 3 days! From the email I got they are just $50k away from reaching the amount needed to start production.
Here is the trailer for what he has planned (all in game footage)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlIWJlz6-Eg
The idea is for the game to have a campaign mode (if you chose to join the military) where you are a fighter pilot. You then retire and are let loose on the galaxy (bit like X3) however its online...think 1st person EvE.
The best bit and this makes me nerdgasum is you and say 8 of your mates could be chilling in the CIC of your buddies carrier when your jumped by pirates. As your buddy spools up the jump drives you and your 7 friends are rushing through a 1km carrier to get to your fighters to defend her as it preps to jump.
Here's Chris Roberts Website, loads more vids and notes on what to expect

So come on PC fans lets put a genera that warms the hearts of a lot of us back on the map and more importantly show everyone that PC's aren't dead they are just getting started!

as well as thinking about Elite,
Me too, I had it on the Amiga, spent hours and hours on it....I have never played a game so much as I have Elite. Heck, with todays tech , I wonder what the Thargoids would be like? I'd much rather a new Elite than Wing Commander if given the choice.
Having said that, this does look good!
Have backed SC for the Lancer, and Beczl for the Mig21bis but not backed anything else so far.
Wing commander 3 and 4 I almost wore the disks out and also with The Darkening: Privateer 2, that one was my favorite one on the PC. I had Elite on the Beeb and later got Frontier on the Amiga and also later the PC.
Just now I'm deeply into Skyrim and enjoying it even tho I came to it late.

Actually, provided that you are on xbox or pc, you've arrived at the best time. Most bugs have been ironed out, a few DLC's are out, and there are loads of mods for pc.Wing commander 3 and 4 I almost wore the disks out and also with The Darkening: Privateer 2, that one was my favorite one on the PC. I've been following the thread on here, reading back a few dozen pages In real life I'm an archer and I quite like the implementation of it in Skyrim tho the energy transfer in game is quite unlike real-life, I don't have the most powerful bow in the world but I do worry about through and through shots, the "muzzle" energy of my bow is about 80ft/lbs and arrows fly at just over 300ft/secSo now that Arena Commander has now hit V1.0 I wondered if any of you guys are shooting people on it
I am finding it much easier to fly with a keyboard and mouse and have got the hornet pretty much dancing now.
Also love the new trailer, big thumbs up to the devs by using a fan made trailer as the base then working with the guy to make this: http://youtu.be/lJJ9TcGxhNY
Also whilst we are at it, lets put all the current Star Citizen commercials in one place

Yeh Ive played it abit more. Servers are abit flackey just now with the 1.0 launch but that will be fixed soon.
Ive outfitted my Super Hornet with some extra firepower and other ships just melt when all guns are firing.
I took some screenshots a while ago. Pre 1.0 though. It does look great allready.

I've ponied up my £30 for beta access, download copy of the game and access to arena commander and downloaded the 20gb "patch" to give it a go.
Just did the dogfighting mission against drones that they released.
Holy st, that was incredibly good fun! Even with not knowing any of the button mappings and my brain exploding due to the yaw and roll being mixed up, it was still a total blast to fly around and shoot the st out of the Kilrathi Vanduul fighters. It made the Elite combat seem sterile, and for want of a better word, boring.
The control scheme is much more "real", in that you have thrusters and rotating your ship doesn't immediately change direction. You basically powerslide around, which is actually very nice and controllable, but it's going to take a while to get good at. It's completely different to Elite, which is much more point and shoot on the default settings and it purposely restricts yaw rate so that space flight is more like atmospheric flight and it's all about rolling and pitching. SC is all about pitch and yaw (as wing commander used to be).
The major problem is that it has yaw on the x axis and roll on the twist (z?) axis, and no way to change that as far as I can see at the moment. Swapping between Elite and this is going to be tricky (I know you can turn off flight assist in Elite to get a similar flight style, but it still has a restricted yaw speed, doesn't it?)
It looks great though. Haven't managed to get the Rift working yet, but I haven't really tried that hard.

Meanwhile in the still unfinished Star Citizen.

"So players usually spawn in a starting area," explains Star Citizen player xx-shalo-xx. "These areas are armistice zones, which block PvP. However 'healing' a player through an involuntarily needle injection isn't seen as PvP. You can see where this is going. Players spot a geared guy and bum rush him and stab him full. The player then actually overdoses and dies and the gear is yours for the taking."

The thing is...it looks like bits of it are good, and my brother, who has played recently confirmed that yes...bits of it are good, other bits are unfinished crap.
But it is seven years late now...
All they need is another ten years and eleventy billion dollars to put it all together.
I did back it on kickstarter at the lowest tier, £20 I think, so I could try but I don't have the hard drive space and can't be bothered making it for something that night be a disaster.. Maybe when I get around to getting a new computer.
Oddly I'm still more bothered about that £20 nine years ago than many much more recent and bigger wastes of money...hope it comes good in the end.

There's quite a few disenchated Elite Dangerous content creators checking out SC in the last six months. Sounds like if you ignore the insane history and poor performance/£/time then there's stuff there to enjoy IF you have a grunty PC.
I tried SC in a free fly weekend and just gave up looking at a 10-20fps slide show (Ryzen 1600X and RX580).
There's certainly some amazing looking pictures and videos out there.
But again you have to ignore that for going on half a billion bucks and a decade of "effort" it's nowhere near finished.

I'm watching out as well. Got frustrated the the grind in E and hated the engineering mechanism. I also noted E YouTubers moving/trying SC as well - have asked a friend who plays both what his views are as apparently they have a big sale every November including the starter packs. Way I see it if I get 30-40 enjoyable hours out of it then the cost (£30-50) is no different from most other games (ok paid just £13 for Sub Nautica, but that was a long wait).
One comment I had seen was that the free periods they do result in server problems due to load not seen as much else where. Having said that my PC is high spec else I might not thinking about trying the game.

I've watched a few videos on Youtube on Star Citizen. Watched a couple of people in the biggest ship (craft?) in the game. One of the videos alluded to multiple people playing on this huge thing as crew. The ship had pretty much everything a superyacht would have. Which made me wonder - are people going to be playing this game to do stuff like peel potatoes and restock fridges? And the ship also had a swimming pool - what's that all about? Will people in their VR gear "virtually swim" or something?
