Remembering old games as having brilliant graphics.
Discussion
Am I the only one who remembers older games as having really brilliant polished graphics? It is quite disappointing trying a game I remember as being brilliant graphically only for it to look awful next to current games, is this just my mind making me think they were HD with brilliant high res textures?
Ah I see you purchased rose tinted spectacles from the Internet.
It's your minds eye that recreates them as stunning yet leaves them feeling terrible as you try to rekindle the fun you had. The worst for my was having a go on golden eye for the N64 a couple of years back and being truly and utterly disappointed

Sega Rally - I don't think I'd be quite so impressed today..
The Xbox360 version is quite fun
(alright, it isn't the same game)I remember thinking the likes of Colin McRae Rally 1, V-Rally2 etc being amazing at the time. But today...
CMR1 I remember being the first game I played where your car would accumalate dirt over it!
How about 'Shadow of the Beast' (the first one) with unseen before parallel scrolling and Don B's Space Ace on laserdisc?
Going back a little further there was also Outrun on the Spectrum which pushed the boundaries at the time.
I'm sure they'd all look absolutely awful now, but being a geek I can appreciate why; Given the hardware differences they're probably more impressive/more optimised then a modern game.
edited to add: I take it back - Space Ace still looks pretty cool (it was released in 1983 - http://www.dragons-lair-project.com/games/material... and Shadow of the Beast clips on YouTube just make me want to play it again (and how the soundtrack was great) rather than consider how bad the graphics are)

+ 1 on Goldeneye, i think Elite has weathered well though...
Elite always looked pretty rubbish - as the graphics were absolutely secondary to the strategic side of the game IMHO. For 3d games, Zarch was always used as a benchmark back in the day - much better than Elite graphically, but not much of a game.
All relative isn't it, I remember when they launched the sega mega CD(massive success with that one..) Sewer shark game looked amazing.
And earlier oohing and aahing at the parallax scrolling in Quack attack!
Edit: Quack shot apparently.

They were at the time...
I got the original Need for Speed and Constructor out a month or so ago. NFS was awful, Constructor although aged graphically was still enjoyable gameplay.
Transport Tycoon is a game I often play that seems to have aged well in that the graphics don't bother me.

Yup, I remember Gran Turismo 1 at the time - the reflections on the cars convinced me that it was indistinguishable from a TV replay. I was wrong.
It was properly amazing at the time though. In all its 640x480 glory
