Was intending to get 7 year old son a 3DS for his birthday then read the 3D was not recommended for youngsters eyes. So went off at a tangent and got Lego.
So now thinking a DS XL for Christmas but then wife suggested a Wii.

Now as I am still in the dark ages, I haven't got a clue about either.

If I go for the Wii with a basic package included will that be all that is needed to start him with and what else do I need to get that is "required"

Sure an orange and a gold covered chocolate coin is a better bet!

Our 7 year old has a DS and a Wii. The Wii is better for things like FIFA and Skylanders, but the DS is portable and you can get get one of them funny cards for it wink

The 3DS has a parental control which allows you to turn off the 3D function unless you put a pin in. Not too sure I'd go for a Wii when the WiiU is coming out shortly as Nintendo will probably put a lot more exclusives on the WiiU than the wii.
