Right, I'm hankering for a new Multiplayer online game. I'm bored of BF3 and the new BLOPS 2 is well a bit pants so what's next?

I hired Ghost Recon Future Soldier from Blockbusters the other day. I know it's been out for a while but I never played it as reviews at the time weren't great however it's turned out to have a pretty good Multiplayer element to it although not enough people play it so you sometimes have to wait to get into games or play with the yanks. It a lot more fun\deeper than BLOPS2 but I'm not sure it'll have the legs to keep me hooked. Anyone else tried this?

Is their anything out now or coming out soon which might satisfy my craving to compete with\kill complete strangers online? Would prefer an FPS game but anything good will do at this point to while away the long winter nights.

Played that for quite a few months already and while it is a good game it has a few too many flaws to keep me hooked for the long term. It's quite slow paced so doesn't have that pick up and play feel to it, the points grind get's pretty annoying after you get to the mid tiers as it takes AGES to get anything unless you are prepared to spend real money every week and it's just not visceral enough for me I'm afraid as you need to play it in a slow methodical way to be successful which I'm just not in the mood for all the time.

Anything else? Aren't we getting any other decent triple AAA titles before Christmas?

Eve online?

Not FPS and takes commitment (Dust514 is its FPS partner)

Tried Planetside 2 in the vain hope that it might be the one but it lags like crazy to the point of being unplayable for a lot of the time and the game has no focus. You can spend an hour wondering around before anything interesting happens and when it does you still don't know what's going on and I gave this a solid week before coming to that conclusion. Massively mutliplayer? Massively multi-confusing more like.

Mechwarrior I play now and again. It's OK in small doses but the game is still very much in Beta so it's quite limited at the moment and not polished enough. This has the potential to get better as time goes on but it's a long way off yet IMO.

Not tried DUST 514 but my experience of Planetside 2 which has a similar concept doesn't fill me with enthusiasm. Getting a squad of 4 people to co-operate in a game is hard enough, asking 50 to do it is just asking for trouble and the scope of these massively multiplayer games sounds great on paper but in reality being a very small cog in a massive wheel just doesn't feel personally satisfying to me. BF3 is probably about as big as you can go in terms of map size\player count before the whole thing looses focus\cohesion but that's just my personal opinion.

The last game I think you are talking about EVE which I've also tried. Again it's OK but it's more of a strategy\rts game then an action game which is fine as I usually love decent RTS's games but again this feels like too much of a grindfest to be much fun plus it's requires a monthly payment subscription which I'm not a huge fan of.

Does anyone know when the Aliens Colonial Marines Game is due for release. Something like that sound like it would be right up my street?

I like Gears of War 3 online, but it does take a while of playing online before getting the skills to be competetive. Next installment is out in March and All the games are worth buying for the campaign and story mode alone.

This is a third person shooter, over the should style, but it doesn't take long to get used to and you get to use a chainsaw attachment on your rifle to kill aliens, what more is needed?

Finished the Gears of War 3 campaign when it came out which I really enjoyed and played the Multi-player for a bit which was fun for a while but again I think it's one of those which are quite limited in scope so it didn't hold my interest for long. Didn't know the next one was out so soon though so I'll definitely keep an eye out for that one.

Just found out Colonial Marines is due out in February so a few months to go for that too. I might have to dig out my old Counter Strike CD's for my competitive online fix at this rate!

If you like RTS games I will recommend Ruse – see page 3 on here for a small thread, looks like just three of us playing. Can always get an online game, games are set for between 30mins and 1hr but will be shorter if there is an all out victor. So you can get a FPS type fix. Can play on your own or with one other against up to three opponents depending on game type.

Actually not a bad shout - I believe Counter-Strike has been re-released as Counter Strike Global Offensive. Talking of which...Team Fortress?

I'll give Ruse a look see. Thanks

Played Team Fortress 1 many years ago but somehow missed TF2. I think that's available on Steam now right? I might give that a go.

Chivalry is a lot of fun, although it is perhaps a little unpolished in places (for example inconsistent voice command voiceovers). I've not played War of the Roses so I don't know how it compares; as far as I know there is a little more to the combat, there's mounted combat and more character customisation.

It's worth looking up TotalBiscuit on Youtube, he's done a number of videos on both including a comparison.

cheers, I'll look that up. I quite enjoyed Mount & Blade and I assume these are more of the same.

For those who suggested Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike Global Offensive a big thank you.

Downloaded both off Steam a few days ago. TF2 is now free and is a brilliant update to TF1 which I played to death years ago. Having much fun playing this at the moment.

Even better is Counter Strike Global Offensive, for some reason this remake of the classic completely passed me by but it was on sale on Steam for about £8 so I thought it would be rude not too and OH MY, this has taken me back. It's classic CS given a bit of modern spit and polish and I am LOVING IT.

I forgot how brutal and unforgiving this game was. It definitely doesn't hold your hand with silly perks and kill streak rewards so those who have been brought up on the newer COD style games might be in for a bit of a shock (Had a COD noob on last night complaining that it was sh*t as it didn't even have any perks, LOL)

However for no holds barred old skill FPS gameplay it's still unbeatable and you KNOW that when you get that headshot with a double tap using an AK47 from halfway across the map, it was all down to your skill and not because you've chosen the best gun\skill\perk combo. Now I just need to get back in the zone as even a few weeks break from CO can see you slip, I've not played it for years so getting headshotted by pro's using pistols makes me sad. frown
