My son's X Box has been causing problems - red ring of death thing caused by overheating. It's been repaired twice and has failed twice. It's failed again this evening.

It's one of the very first X Box's (white) and annoyingly quite a few of his Christmas presents are X Box related. He's 11 and very upset.

So I'm going to bite the bullett and go down to PC World and buy him a new one tomorrow.

I see there are black ones now and the low memory ones are under £150.... Will his 250gb flash drive (the detachable memory unit on the side) be compatible? Are there any downsides to buying a lower memory version given we have the additional memory storage?

I'm really not an expert as I don't play computer games. Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks.....

If you mean the hard disk drive, no it isn't compatable, unless you can find some way of getting the data of it he's lost all his savegames and progress.

He hasn't lost any DLC or xbox live profile stuff, you can just reload all of that onto the new one.

Ok thanks.....

Should I spend a bit more and buy one with more memory?

I don't think the old detachable HDD is compatible with the new XBOX. When my original white XBOX failed I had to use a memory stick to transfer data from it to the new XBOX. You have to format the USB stick just to allow the XBOX to recognise it. There are plenty of guides on YouTube to help repair the XBOX if you want to nurse it along. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem recently. His hard drive won't be compatible with a new slim line xbox unfortunately but you can get a Data Transfer cable for it by either contacting Microsoft and requesting one (I did this about two/three years ago and it was free but took two weeks to arrive) or buying one from Game etc. for about fifteen quid. I bought the 250Gb version which came with two games but without Kinnect for £170 in the end and my old data kit worked perfectly. The difference in price was about £20 but for that you get 246Gb extra memory.

I had a ring of death and using a different power adaptor fixed it instantly. A re-positioning of the original adaptor where it would stay cooler provided a permanent fix (once it had been off overnight to cool)

If you can use a screwdriver then the 'x-clamp fix' is easy and works, I have 3 xboxes (don't ask) and two have been repaired (by me) with the clamp replacement and still work great.

I can do it for you if you are local?

The power adapter (the big grey box) is in a very cool location.... Nowhere near any other objects.

You can transfer the data to a memory stick, which drive you save stuff to is buried in the setup menus, it will copy the stuff over when you change the drive. This certainly works for your profile as my son keeps his profile on a memory stick, and uses it when he goes to mate's houses.

You can do the reverse onto the new machine.

That's really most kind of you to offer - but this repair has already been done by a local repair shop. There's no way I can check this of course, but the guy is normally first class, so I have no reason to doubt him.

My xbox was constantly locking up and I just nipped down to sainsburys and picked up a new 250gb slim for £144...

Transfer cables clip on to the original memory pack and plug into the usb port onto the new xbox. They're about £15 and needed.....

Im not sure if this applies to every Xbox, but my white 4gb original 360 died earlier in the year, and I replaced it with a new 360 slim, which had a port for the removable HDD.

I took the original 4gb disk drive, removed the outer plastic until i had the naked HDD and just plugged it into the new xbox. Saved me faffing about with cables/memory sticks etc.

If the original 360 250gb drive is a standard 2.5" SATA drive like the 4gb you may be able to do the same.

Yup. I did similar when I upgraded from my original 20Gb drive to a 250Gb. You plug the new HDD into the xbox, and fire it up. Then you plug the old HDD into the cable and plug the cable into the Xbox. A piece of software on the xbox then fires up and gives you the option to transfer all your stuff.

The OP won't be the first person to want to transfer to a new xbox so using the cable is the perfect way to keep hold of all your digital goodies. So the poster who said "your kid will lose all his save games" is talking twaddle.

In my defence, I didn't know anything about these data transfer cable things...

Cool. Will do that.

Do you think they hold them in store? Must do I guess.
