I have read all the reviews to see which is rated the best but I thought I would ask the PH masses which they think is best.

Regardless of cost, set up, wired or wireless etc etc

Which would you rate as the best overall sound once set up correctly and why?

I have had the Turtle Beach PX21's, Tritton AX Pro and now the Tritton Pro+.

Turtle Beach are very good at the lower price bracket
Tritton AX Pro is very good but a tad expensive (great for watching films too)
Tritton Pro+, not used yet so can't comment.....

Astro A40's?
Astro A50's?
Tritton Warhead?
etc etc

Are gaming headsets better than a decent set of headphones for gaming? I read something about poor soundstage from audio headphones but its all a bit Greek to me to be honest!

Depends what format you want them for.

I used the Creative Fatal1ty Headset for the PC and thought it was fantastic. Really comfortable and the sound quality was excellent. The build quality was nice as well, faux-moleskin pads for comfort and thick chunky plastics. I broke them by getting them caught on the arm of my chair and then standing up and walking through the cabling, snapping the headphone jack redface

I've got the Turtlebeach PX21s in the Xbox but I try to refrain from using them because they're so bad.

I've replaced the Fatal1tys on the pc with a set of Plantronics... £20 from Maplins... Absolutely fantastic! I'd say they're only trumped by the Fatal1tys because the mic can be removed from the Fatal1tys.

Have owned Turtle Beach X1s and X31s, and currently own Tritton Warheads. The warheads are nice, really comfy and great sound. Their main benefit is if you are an Xbox player they are 100% wireless.

A50s or Warheads are the best out there atm I believe.

Have Fatal1tys for the PC and they are brilliant, comfortable and the detachable mic is a good idea.
Tritons for the xbox and they are ace! Don't let the Madcatz thing put you off, mine have taken a beating and still sound great!

I've got one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronics-Gamecom-Gaming...

Works very well and creates impressive 7.1 surround. Worth a look.

I saw a set of Turtle Beach headphones in GAME recently for £140, they'd want to be pretty bloody special at that kind of price imo.

Rob, hi i would look into getting a dss earforce firstm especialy as your a cod user, do you still play mw3? or have you moved ino black ops 2?.

i have the px21 and a dss surroound sound box, from ebay there is also a dss box 2? helps u hear people walk around you even if they have ninja,

also i would like to add that the ps4 may not be compatible with the current headphones so if you would like to lose money and you are likely to buy a ps4 on release then re consider if you really need any propr headphones untill u can confirm that you can use these on the ps4

heres a bit about the dss box for anyone else, it truly helps me in my hardcore FFA games,

read reviews if you do consider buying as some people dont actually notice a difference, but i sure did.

Some good input and advice guys.

I seem to have confused some of you as I don't want to buy any as i have the Tritton Pro+ at the moment and have previously had Tritton AX Pro's and Turtle beach PX21's......

I was just wanting peoples experiences and what they use or rate highly smile

I bought a set of Tritton Triggers about 5 months ago and they were fantastic, brilliant for the price although the wires were a bit of pain.

However I've managed to somehow break part of the cabling so no sound comes out of the left hand side ear piece. Although when using the headphones in the laptop/other device, sound comes out clearly both sides.

I'm gonna keep watching this thread and see if I find something I fancy taking a punt on so if anyone recommends an indestructible headset it'd be much obliged.

Ignoring cost I would probably go for Astro A50's for console gaming, or a Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card + Sennheiser PC360's for PC gaming.

I had a terrible time with the A50's I was given as a Christmas gift. Have a look at the Astro support forums, I'm not an isolated case!

When I got the A50's they were dead out of the box, after contacting support it took over a month to get a replacement set. The replacement failed within 4 days. I had to argue to get a refund as it was over 30 days! I'd stay well away from the Astros.

When it was working the A50 was fantastic. Apparently Astro were bought by Skullcandy and since then quality and support have gone out the window.
