Need a new Xbox ...does the 4gb cut it?
Discussion
I bought an Xbox 360 when they were launched...2004?? I really like the Halo games. Played them all over the years, campaign mode only. Xmas last year I bought an Xbox live membership which has changed my playing habit exponentially. I love it!, my console developed the red ring of death a few weeks back, after a few months of Halo 4 live. I took it for repair and it worked fine for a few more weeks.
It started freezing yesterday again. Back to the repairer who I think has managed to kill it beyond economical repair. Least I got my £45 back.
Anyway, I was all set to buy a new 4gb 360 console (£129 argos seems cheapest) however, doing a bit of research indicates a 4 gb console may not handle Halo 4. Can this really be the case?
I don't know what memory the original consoles had, but surely the new one must have more. I stress I'm not streaming films, storing photos or the like, just playing games, Halo 4 and maybe some others. Will the 4gb cut it?
Is it an ache to transfer membership from my 8 months remaining from Xbox live membership between consoles?
Advice from experienced gamers welcomed...

Yep Halo4 takes a lot of space, you need more than 4gig if memory serves.
If on your original you have an old style external HDD you can break that apart and fit it to the new console (youtube it) - may be a cheaper solution for you if funds are tight to buy a second hand old style external and do this.
Moving accounts accross consoles is easy - you just need to log into the new one and it brings all your info accross.

If you are playing many online games then the 4GB will quickly disappear with updates, patches and DLC.
I have the 4GB Xbox and I currently have a 16GB memory stick and a 20GB hard drive attached to it due to running out of space. (Mainly due to Battlefield 3)
If you are a one game guy then you may be ok, although I do re call reading that Halo 4 won't play on a 4GB version.
Your best bet would be to a buy a 60 or 120GB hard drive off eBay and plug that into it.
As for the accounts, setting up an existing Gamertag on a new console isn't difficult at all, you just download your profile from Live. To transfer over your save data etc. you will need either a transfer cable or a memory stick.

Thanks for confirming that. I don't want to buy one at all now with the new one 12 months or so away but when the mrs is out I'm loving a bit of big team infinity slayer!,
Anyone know where the best deal is? I really only want the console with 250g but to get three games bundled with it seems sensible for not much more (£199 the console or £210 with 3 newish games )

Can you not just buy the 4gb model and then buy an external USB HDD? Ive no idea but surely thats possible? I've used USB memory sticks in my original Xbox plenty of times for file transfers etc. No idea if you can install a game onto something via USB or not though.
ETA : Google suggests the above is perfectly possible.
Something like this would do.. http://www.dabs.com/products/samsung-500gb-m3-port...

You will only be able to use 16GB of whatever external device you connect to the Xbox.
Ahh right. Google didn't say that.
Still, you could just get a 16gb USB stick and install games which need installing (most dont) onto that. Loading screens might take a bit longer than from the internal HDD but then thats the price you pay for not going for a bigger internal drive

Seems it's actually 32gb these days.
I have an original 20gb Xbox. Ive never filled that. 32GB would be plenty.

My original Xbox died many a time and got it replaced after many returns. The new one recently RROD'd whilst playing Skyrim (just as it was getting good, grrr) and instead of getting it fixed I got a new one, 250gb S bundle. With the bundle it came with all the games I have already got so sold those to friends so essentially got the new one for <£100
Well I bought the 4gb with a 8gb stick from Costco, who were incidentally the cheapest. I figured this gave me 12gb of memory. But it didn't as downloading war games, without the additional spartan episodes nigh on filled the 4gb Xbox and stick right up.
I swapped for the 250 gab version. Now all is well!!

If anyone wants to upgrade there original Xbox (20gb) to a new s 320gb hard drive there a few tutorials on youtube, took me 20 mins dismantling and rebuilding hard drive cases. Very simple, just need some T screw drivers.
You swap the HDDs between cases as the part that connects to the console is different.
But yes... The more memory the better, free games updates, demos, downloads. BF3 has near 10gb on mine I think, if not more.

The elites are pretty sturdy boxes. They are the model before the slim and don't suffer from the RROD. They come with a 120GB hard drive, you should be able to pick a good one up for around £50 on eBay.
They're also quieter. With the bigger hard drive you can install games, which further cuts down on load times and disc noiseGassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
