War Thunder ???
Discussion
Anyone discovered War Thunder yet ? Appears to be very similar to World of Tanks , in fact I thought that it was the initial release of the World Of Planes ...
However seems not to be the case. Only downloaded it last night, and had a quick flight on the tutorials but does look good.
Not just planes either, boats n vehicles too.

I played a fair few games in it, on the whole it's good but there are a few annoyances (or were a month or 2 ago) with the non-fighting part of the game -
1) lack of instructions combined with non-obvious controls/objectives can be frustrating, eg. 'you need to capture the airfield' without telling you how to capture... Also levelling crews isn't obvious.
2) Mine took ages to start up (>5 minutes) as it had to scan the files every time
The fighting is fun, but there is a big disparity between how much damage various guns do - you can hit an enemy half a dozen times and do some damage, he can hit you and take your wing off in one shot. Also the fighters armed with cannons are better at destroying gorund targets than bombers, but it is fun flying aorund higher than everyone else just dropping bombs on the ground targets! It also helps a lot if you have a friend to form a 'flight' (platoon in world of tanks) with as getting someone off your tail is next to impossible but I guess this is realistic.
I have no idea how the matchmaking works either, you pick a country that you have planes for then go into the fight, the other planes are about the level as your top plane in that country. I couldn't find a way of having a game in a level 1 German plane against level 1 German planes once I had bought a level 3 German plane, for example.
This was all a couple of months back so maybe the above is no longer accurate, would love to know what's changed as the fighting is good fun.

How are people getting on? I started playing again in the last couple of days and seem to be enjoying it more than I used to.
Especially my last game - I was in my Blenheim just hanging around at 4000m dropping bombs on the ground targets, our team was losing by a lot, only had a couple of ground targets left and I realised I was the last plane alive! The next few minutes were an intense firefight with all my turrets chattering away continuously against all the enemy fighters, me trying to bomb the last few targets. I got 19 ground targets in the end with my plane didn't look too healthy just before they shot the tail off...

Downloaded this last weekend and really enjoying it!
Playing primarily as British and Russian aircraft.
Gets really good once you start upgrading the bombers to take torpedos (Beaufort + Swordfish) as more naval battles (Pelieu and Norwegian fjords) open up in arcade mode.
Night time maps are interesting, especially on those naval maps as the search lights blind you on your run in!

I've played it for a couple of weeks but then lost interest.
The main appeal to me was the bombers. The idea of having deffencive automated turrets was a refreshing change from WoT's "point and click" approach. However all bombers are complete garbage as everyone just rams you, or the remainder of the team offers no support what so ever.
I lost interest shortly after and ended back on WoT.

I've been playing this for a few months now and I'm enjoying it, although I will echo most people's comments that the bombers are sadly just not worth playing.
The reality is that the initial bomb loads you get given generally don't do much damage, and by the time you get yourself into position to drop those bombs, the fighters and attack aircraft have swooped down and taken out the targets already. In arcade mode you won't get any support from your team; they will be out to shoot down enemy aircraft and that's all that they'll do. To be fair though I can't blame them, that's how you get high scores, bombing a few pillboxes or destroyers just doesn't net you the same points that downing a plane or two would.
I've noticed though since the latest patch that my planes seem to be made of paper - the amount of 'one shot kills' I'm suffering is starting to get on my nerves, yet I can fill an enemy aircraft with bullets and shells and they just soak it up. It's not always the case mind, I have had the odd 'one shot kill' as well, but the fragility of my own planes is starting to grate on me.
They need to sort out the sound effects for the guns too - they sound awful at the moment.
Overall though I'm enjoying it, I normally have a few battles a day and I'm slowly working my way up the ranks.

If you read the Warthunder forums it's just full of despair at the game it seems - it's like it won't take much to turn it into a good game, but then they go and release a patch that seems to ruin another aspect.
They reduced the blast radius of the bombs so it's much harder to get any kills in a bomber, but take a fighter and spray machine guns at the tanks and it's much easier.
At the moment there's a bug where the bomber's gunners either don't fire, or fire towards a target that used to be in range. Taking over the guns yourself doesn't help at all.
There's no documentation about the patches and what they do, so the players have to test the planes to see what's changed.
The economy is now tweaked so you need a premium account to make money above tier 8 I think, apparently using the jets is a privilege that you need to pay for (despite the game being in beta).
It's so close to being a great game that it's really frustrating they don't fix these minor things.

I never knew that, but its funny you mention it as I'm sure the other day I took control of a gunner and even though the crosshairs were on the target, I swear the rounds were going off in a different direction.Bumping this as after a graphics update in the game some people made a Battle of Britain film from the replays of a huge private game -

It's now a very pretty game

7 1/2 years on and it's still *almost* a good game!Gassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

Was funny watching the replay and seeing two of them colliding though!
