...forced integration of dissimilar platforms?

New telly programme and MMO set in the same world. They are aiming for an 'immersive experience' where stuff that happens on the telly affects the game and vice versa.

Telly programme starting on the 16th April on Syfy.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2189221/

And associated MMO available on PC, Xbox360 and PS3.

http://trionworlds.com/en/games/defiance/

The game has had mixed reviews so far (mainly technical and content driven - no surprise really) but I think I will give it a go. Any one with me?

I've got the series on record and the client downloading now. I did have a Beta access but was busy over the weekend so not yet had a chance to play it - looked fun enough to add to my ever-expanding Steam list!

I went to Steam first but Judas pointed me in the direction of Gamefly that has a 20% off code. smile

£27.99 rather than £34.99 from Steam. Downloading as we speak.

The telly program starts on the 16th April at 9pm.

I'm not interested in the TV show but the game is excellent. Very brave too, and the shape of things to come for console MMO's.

Looks kinda cool but I'm not buying the whole interconnectivity thing. I don't see what it's particularly offering over any other game based on a film/programme? Anyone care to try & explain it to me? smile

Very interested in the idea, sounds like a good thing.

Interested in people's findings as if I join I will be a console user.

I played the Beta for about 20 minutes, it just feels so dated that it could of been a Playstation 1 game..

I was excited at the though of a console MMO but it really isn't an MMO.

Waiting on Destiny to come out and see if that fills the FPS MMO gap instead. smile

The only thing that really qualifies this as "not an MMO" is that there aren't any challenges that require a lot of players. Sure, you couldn't solo an arkfall in the time limits allotted, but I've never once felt endangered during an Arkfall, they feel more like jumping on a big treasure chest than fighting dangerous raidboss like you'd see in WoW or Borderlands. You never feel like you need to work with the other players because standing pretty much on the spot, unloading ammo into the targets is enough to succeed.

The mission balance is poor, some are a lot harder than others with little reasoning, and can be screwed by a team of players passing through the area, spawning a lot of enemies with high HP, which can leave you on your own trying to fight them off. When you are playing alone, this can really grate. This is probably my biggest gripe, though given that death is inconsequential you won't care too much. It says early on that dying costs a lot of money, but I have 40,000 credits in my wallet and I only get charged 150 or so whenever I die.

The game is ugly, and pretty dull to look at. The gameplay is not brilliant, with issues regarding hit detection, graphics issues, poor AI etc, making things more difficult and frustrating than they need to be. I almost feel sorry for the people that made this game, because you can see they had such big ideas, but despite 5 years the game is still flawed, though their passion is so evident and they do care so much about making it work, and will continue to do so with a lot of planned free and paid DLC, along with player support in the future. Unfortunately, it seems that they were probably forced to spend a large portion of their time and budget on getting the online side of things working properly, which it now seems to for the most part. However, this has left a game with stable online functionality, at least for me in the UK, but poor graphics and gameplay, along with gameplay balance issues which erode the fun that could have been had.

And now, after 20 minutes of downloading patches, the servers are not working. fk this.

It does have some obvious flaws, and is technically pretty low rent.

That said, I find it quite addictive and there is much fun to be had, if you can see past the flaws. It will never be remembered as a classic, but as the shape of things to come I suspect it will be cited in years to come as a title of significance. We'll see more and more of this sort of MMO style game, and other online integrations like asynchronous gameplay. It's a good testbed for Destiny!

It also helps that at the moment there is frankly fk all to play, so I don't mind sinking the hours into this! A lot of people are really hammering it though. I'm regularly running into players in co-op missions at over 1000 EGO (my rating is about 450 at the moment).

I did not get off to a good start. Bad timing meant that I installed the game yesterday just as the new huge patch was released. Meaning that it took over an hour from putting the disk in the Xbox to finally being able to play, only to find the servers down.

The game feels like a slightly polished version of Star Wars the old republic on PC. So far it's not really hitting the spot with me. Maybe as far as I'm concerned the third person format dose not help. After an hours game play I find I'm loosing interest and would rather be on PH.
I'll give it another go it might grow on me.

Yes, it is fun when it works and it's certainly a real achievement in terms of being one of the first working MMOs on a consol, it will certainly have a place on the timeline of console MMOs in that will inevitably be reviewed by gaming publications in 20 years time.

When it works, it can be fun. There is a definite thrill to be had teaming up with a few other players and defending a farm against waves of incoming bandits.

Well it has started to grow on me. In fact since the recent patches I'm really enjoying the game. Anyone else ark hunting.
