medieval 2 total war

Anyone still play this guys ? Booted it up again the other night . Still cant do the battles so sim them which i suppose kinda defeats the object.....

Any more modern games like this out ? Used to love the original Command and Conquer games and age of empires.

I dug out Empire Total War the other day, great fun but still have trouble getting my troops to stay where I put them.

I find getting the computer to do battles for me is a bit hit and miss. In open terrain the computer often does better than me, but if I'm seiging a town the computer gets slaughtered in battles I can win. I think it tends to go on the offensive and run in to city defences while I tend to play defensively and let the enemy come to me while I pound them with cannons (presumably slightly different issues in Medieval due to the different weapons). Empire also has naval battles which I really haven't got the hang of.

As for modern equivilents, ShogunII: Total War is only a couple of years old, and there's supposed to be a RomeII soon as well.

I never tried Shogun. Napoleon's not bad, though the fighting is similar to Empire as it's all cannon, musket and cavalry. Never player Rome either so a new RomeII should be interesting.

I loved Rome and Medieval 2 was good, but haven't got on with the others. Rome 2 is on the way

Liked Rome, Medieval 1, like Napoleon so far (only just started it, currently doing the Italian campaign) didn't like Medieval 2. Don't know why.

Try the Theatre Of War series if you're interested in WW2 Even the first one is excellent.

Loved Medieval II, I'm torn whether that's the best of the bunch compared to Rome or not, I still play the Britannia campaign a fair bit. I never really got on with Empire, couldn't get my head around the battles with lines of troops shooting each other.

As for the battles in Medieval II, make sure you have a general in the army and don't press charge too early as the computer moves their troops around a fair bit.

I'm actually tempted to base my new computer around what Rome II needs...

I can't get my head around the lines of firing troops, it just doesn't seem practical. Much prefer the Rome and Medieval fighting styles.

I got a new PC for Medieval 2, I'll probably be upgrading this one for Rome 2 if I haven't already done it for BF4.

I'm fine with the small armies, but I just can't my head around controlling a large army and keeping them pointing them in the right direction - much prefer setting my urban cohorts or viking raiders into a melee and leaving them at it. Same with the naval battles, I can handle a small force but I'm just useless when it's larger navies.

I do prefer the big map on Empire though, not having to send emissaries out is a good thing, plus I like the little villages that you can upgrade as specific items. If they put that in Rome II I may have to pre-order it, something I said I'd never do!

I know exactly what you mean, far too many times I've got involved in part of a battle only to find a load of enemy cavalry have just smashed half my force without me noticing

Mini Map.

If you scout well then you dont get sprung like that. Love TW series but battles are fairly simple.

I got so sick of the ladder bugs in M2 - just ruined the defence/attack battles for me. Never got on with Empire fo some reason. Looking forward to Rome " though, as Rome was my fave of the lot.
