Most newish computer games seem to be FPS which really doesn't interest me, much prefer a bit of a strategy, and am currently playing a bit of Empire: Total war, so can anyone reccomend me some other stuff I might like, bearing in mind I tend to prefer solo than online games? Currently my library looks a bit like this:

Civ: Love them, Civ5 tends to be my go to game when bored but I think I preferred 3
Alpha Centuri: civ on another planet
Total War (Napoleon and Empire): Love the mix between strategy and combat.
Stars!: Ancient game but I love, and it runs well on a low spec laptop
Civ City: Meh
X: Love X2, X3 and TC but always get bored about the point I get on to my second destroyer/carrier
Sins of a solar empire: Not bad
Spore: Evolution my arse, it's creationism
Command and Conquer: Enjoyed Red Alert but others I've tried never really gripped me
XCOM Enemy Unknown: Love it but the graphics give me motion sickness
Railroad Tycoon: Quite good
Capitalism+: An old one that won't run on modent hardware but I remember it fondly
Age of empires: Fun multiplayer but I don't remember the solo campaigns being that great
Homeworld: Loved both of them
Stronghold: Enjoyed designing my castles more than attacking the opponents
Victoria II: Tried on a mates machine, looks good but steep learning curve.

Looking at the Wikipedia page I think I might have played Company of Heroes, and enjoyed it. Looks like there's a couple of more recent expansion packs too.

Yeah two or three expansion packs I think, also the new CoH2 is about to land (or may just have) which looks very good.

The best one ever was Utopia on the Amiga. This post is unhelpful.

Starcraft 1&2, two of the best RTS games on the PC.
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 1&2 plus expansions. Again very solid RTS offering and with all the excellent expansion content, should keep you going for quite a while.

Blitzkrieg
Civilization - Call To Power both quite good, a good alternative to the Sid Meyer Civs.

I've got Call to Power, pretty good, I thought it was Sid Miers? Also tried Sid Miers Pirates and his Railways one, both of which seemed a little pointless.

Not tried Starcraft, Warhammer or Blitzkrieg, will have to look them up.

No the Call to Power series was a rival made by Activision at the height of Sid Meyers Civilzation popularity. The main difference being that they let the technologies go into futuristic ones and created futuristic units etc, also you stacked units to create armies. whereas the other Civs stopped at modern tech and at the time didnt have stacking. There were a few other differences but very good game

Was it CtP where you could build underwater cities? May have to dig that out again.

You could stack units in earlier Civ's couldn't you? That's one of the things that always bugs me about Civ5 that it won't let you stack units to protect your artillary. There was even a combat mod to one version which meant when stacked units fought the ranged units in each stack would engage first, and then the mele units.

Yeah you could build cities underwater and in orbit, and pirate trade routes etc, makes me want to dig it out myself!

Not heard of Jagged Alliance, will have to look it up. Away on work for a couple of weeks next month and might be worth taking some older games that will run on my low powered XP laptop

There was a remake last year which was OK but lacked the depth and humour of the old ones and was real time with pause where the old ones were turn based, each soldier was an individual with a personality, some of them were hilarious.

there is apparently another turn based reboot coming to kickstarter soon

Can't get CtP to run on Win7 frown Might try it on my XP laptop at some point though as required spec seems pretty low

I keep returning to Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (Original with the expansion)
It's an overhead war sim; build a base and attack the enemies. But you you can send off engineers to build as many bases as you like. Maps ranging from small to HUGE that you can zoom right out to see the whole map. Support for up to 8 players (map dependant), AI or human, every player for themselves or team up.
All the usual tanks/planes but when your tech level advances you can build 'Experimental' units smile Think massive tanks, artillery that can hit anything on the map...
There is a solo campaign mode, but now I just play the single maps.
Game time 10 mins to 1hr+
There is a sequel which looks pretter but it's not as good.

Also Anno 2070 for a more economic based game that you can easily lose hours to.

Played one of the earlier Anno games (the Roman era one) and it wasn't bad, not tried the new one.
