As I lament the lack of actual wheel to wheel racing on GT5, is this the game to give me the racing kicks, or will it not be realistic enough for an a-spec level 39 driver with 1200 cars.. (not that those stats say anything about ability, more about how much time I have spent on it!) But if it is arcady then I will put it away pretty quickly.
I loved TOCA and Race Driver but never got round to getting Grid. Anyone tried it or a demo yet?

I suspect it will look pretty but be pretty s
t, but i will try.
The market is so full at the moment (PC wise) that you will probably find that games try and stick to their niches, Grid will be pretty with probable massive damage modelling that again looks pretty.
If you have a PC, Asseto Corse, Iracing, NKPRO, GTR Evolution (whatever the latest one was) Rfactor 1 and 2, Project cars etc are all good.
If it is just PS3, i think GT5 is still your best bet.

It does look very arcadey/drifty but I suspect (hope) it was being played with a d-pad and stabbing of buttons as opposed to the progressive approach of a wheel.
There is a bonnet cam, which is as good as it gets for most cars on GT5, unless you like the same with a blacked-up mock-up of the interior. I do use cockpit view where I can but it isn't a deal breaker. They say that only 5% of users do, so they couldn't be bothered with it.
Of more concern is the racing looked strung out, which isn't what TOCA was like (and which is the massive failing of GT5 in my opinion).

I loved the original Grid! Really was the first console game i'd played in ages where I could jump into open wheeled fun then bomb around in touring cars and drifting before doing LeMans!! Was really face paced too which made it so playable...
I think though that with this one they've changed the concept now to a story mode which makes me a bit hesitant to dive in before I've seen the full reviews!
I'm also one of those in the 5% to make it more realistic I always use the cockpit view...gutted they don't have it on this one!!

Another thing is the lack of classic circuits. The focus seems to be mainly on set-square street circuits which have every potential to be a destruction derby.
Here is a list of the classic circuits:
Autodromo Internacional do Algarve
Brands Hatch
Indianapolis Motorspeedway
Red Bull Ring
Yas Marina
compared to the first game which had some of the following:
Jarama
Nürburgring GP
Donington Park
Istanbul Park
Le Mans
Spa-Francorchamps
Long Beach

I had a bash on this last night. Got to say, I'm disappointed, but maybe childish arcade racers is what I should be expecting from Codies these days.
The graphics are fine, nothing spectacular, maybe a little too much bloom and the constant vignette on the camera looks a little odd. The car handling, is, well, as arcadey as you like. You pretty much drift around every corner, that style of driving is even encouraged. I only spent about 1 hour playing, so only had the chance of a few different tracks, most of which were inner city made up garbage with 90 degree turns everywhere. Although there was one, sort of like a winding coastal road, but the physics remove any kind of enjoyment I might have got from that.
There's no team mate this time either, and your trusty pit chief has been replaced by a random american, who will comment on your "sick turns". You also don't earn money in this game. To buy cars, you earn fans. Yes, virtual fans, earned by completing races that spread onto to virtual social networks.
I enjoyed the first Grid, it was a fun pick and play game. Not realistic, but the physics were some what loosely based on reality. Maybe it's because ot's been so long since the first, but I was expecting more.
Then again I'm old enough to remember when Codies actually made decent racing games. If they keep up with this kind of garbage, along with Kenny from the Block 5, their days are numbered.

I asked today at Game & the boss said Brands was their exclusive, but I have also seen it posted that ANY pre order gets it.
But the old dear on the game counter at Asda/Tesco will not have a clue if that is the case.
I think they have concentrated on city circuits so they can plug "live courses",where the course is totally random through the streets,up to a million possible routes IIRC

It sounds like they totally missed what made Grid such a good game, nice balance of track racing and silky drift stuff. It seems TOCA has gone the same way that Colin McRae Rally has. Like totally not cool dude.
Colin McRae - now DiRT - seems to vary somewhat. All three are good games when you actually get to it, although it goes downhill with 2/3 as they have a lot of mickey mouse rallycross/ken block crap. Once you get past that, there's still some pretty good rallying to be had. DiRT 1 is definately worth picking up if you want semi-casual fun with decent graphics - it's probably very cheap now. All three are good with a wheel.

From what I can make out, it's two new routes around Brands Hatch you get as a pre-order bonus from Game. They have reverse versions of the Indy and GP circuits. Amazon have daytime versions of Yas Marina as theirs. Of course they both have bonus cars too, a bit like the various pre-order versions of Forza 4. I'm tempted by it. I've got Forza 4 for a proper driving game, but I like having an arcadey fun game as well. I liked DIRT 3 in that way. Just something I can pick up and play for half an hour for fun.But the old dear on the game counter at Asda/Tesco will not have a clue if that is the case.

The last few Dirt games were too awesome dude for me. That's obviously what sells though. DiRT 1 is definately worth picking up if you want semi-casual fun with decent graphics - it's probably very cheap now. All three are good with a wheel.
