Ok, so I've downloaded this and set up an account - "CaptainAardvark" (Biggles, Maverick and Iceman were already taken biggrin).

Anyone already playing this game? Do you use a joystick or mouse & keyboard?

Any tips or do's and don'ts you'd like to pass on?

I played it for a bit (username was probably funkynige), only used mouse and keyboard as I don't own a joystick.

It has flaws, but up to tier 6-7 it's fun, just don't fly bombers and don't give them any money until it comes out of beta (patches can and do make what you pay for much worse than when you paid for it).

Russian planes are the easiest to get decent results in (coincidentally it's a Russian developed games), a lot of the matches get dominated by one or two players who drop down from the higher level to have some fun at low level games.

Thanks, I suppose I'll sign up for some flight training now. I do have a joystick for when I used to play IL2 Sturmovic.

From what I understand, it's a really tough game using joystick compared to using the mouse so you may want to give both a try, there are 3 modes of games (arcade, historic and full real) with varying degrees of simulation so if you know what you're doing with a joystick you may be better off sticking to the last two.

I know where you're coming from with the seal clubbing in WoT (71% WR with my tier 2) but it does seem to have a bigger affect in WT (or maybe I'm just on the receiving end more!).

Just downloaded this looks good IF I could get my joystick to work. It just spins uncontrollably. Checking in Windows it all looks calibrated properly.

Any ideas?

Long story short I got it sorted. Not particularly intuitive to sort but done now.

Have done the tutorials, anything I need to know before I get stuck into the main thing?

I've been playing it for a few months now and quickly realised that mouse and keyboard was the way forward. I used my gamepad initially like I do any flight game, but here I just found I could not keep the sights on a target, although maneuvering was easier. Oddly if you crank up the sensitivity of the controls you can have your aircraft pulling some ridiculously speedy moves, but obviously makes it harder to stay in control.

I've reached the point now where I've given up on bombers. I finally got myself the B-25 but found that the rear gunner doesn't do anything, even if I take control - the target is always in the 'gunner deadzone' even if he's directly behind me. No such issues with my Wellington but its just too difficult to score points in bombers. I just stick to fighters and attack aircraft now.

I'm enjoying the game though, I've spent about £12 on it so far to get me various bits and pieces, but I do agree with what a lot of people say in that the Russian aircraft seem quite overpowered by being tougher to kill and seemingly more powerful weapons despite most of them only really having one or two machineguns and a cannon.

Turn the 'auto-repair' off, it costs you money to repair you aircraft if you leave it on, but certainly at the lower levels a couple of your planes will be repaired by the time the fight ends anyway. You'll have loads of money at low levels but you need to start saving for tier 8+ where the repair costs are huge!
Other than that just dive in and start blasting away!

I think the AI gunners got sorted in the latest patch according to the forums, but haven't played it for a few weeks.

Starting to get a feel for it now, though I still wouldn't say I'm any good. Plugging away as the RAF - keen to unlock the Mossie eventually. And just got my first experience of the Hispano's...absolute beauties they are. 1 second burst and I've got a kill. 2 more one second bursts and I've got another kill.

Just a pity they're strapped to that pig of the sky the Beaufighter.

Just made the switch from joystick to mouse and keyboard, actually a little depressing how much easier I'm finding it to get kills - flight sims where a joystick is a hindrance just don't feel right. But hey, it's still fun.

Is there a way of getting golden eagles without buying them or hacking? Not sure if they get acquired from time to time through in game achievements etc.

I'll hang fire on spending them then until I've got a plane worth investing in then, ta.

I'd chuck them into crew training. It'll be a benefit to every plane you use in that crew slot.

Yeah, the crew training is probably the best way to spend the eagles early on. Either that or get a day's premium account and spend as much of that 24hrs playing the game to get money and ranks quicker.

I downloaded this at weekend and quite enjoyed it. I have to agree that it is certainly easier to play with the mouse than a joystick.

Got through all the tutorials on the settings where you can only be inside the cockpit view but then went to arcade mode to play online just to see what it is like. It was pretty good fun and I found myself ducking when several plane were overhead.

I'm not sure I quite understand the game mechanics quite yet. What's the best way to proceed without spending real money or if you do have to spend some cash how to do you make the most of it? I don't mind spending some money but only up to what a game would cost at rrp.

I've been playing it for the last month and haven't spent any money, nor am I particularly inclined to. It's really not essential. I'm sure there are some benefits to be had but I'm happy just pottering along, whilst the unlock progression for planes does get a bit slower after a few ranks it's not horrendously so.

As I understand it you can spend money (golden eagles) on 4 main things
1) premium planes, the ones on the right hand side of the tech tree. Not sure how good they all are, but bear in mind the game's in beta so Gaijin can change the stats at any time (they did this with the Dora mentioned above, really nerfed it a few patches back)
2) converting free XP to country specific XP - you get free XP at the end of each game and for various bonuses, if you convert it you can level up a nation quicker, useful if there's a gap in tech tree of a certain nation
3) premium account - get more money and XP for games
4) crew training - rather than getting a few points per game you can get a whole bunch at one time

I had a few golden eagles when I started the game and spent some on 2) and some on 3).
