War Thunder, a flight sim with naval and ground element
Discussion
I know there were some topics about it, but seeing as it's in beta and constantly changing I thought i'd start afresh for those still not convinced to give it a go.
First of all, it's free to play!
Second of all the graphics is amazing
third of all it has three combat modes, arcade, arcadey and sim!
The Brits are quite well represented too!
I am currently spending every waking moment waiting to get back to the fray!
It especially shines if you have a wingman.
Honestly, if you like dogfights, give it a go!
P.S. the naval and ground sorties are not implemented yet but should be before the year is out.

Been playing a fair bit of this, I'm surprised how good the flight and damage models are, especially on the higher realism modes. Currently deciding weather to work towards a ME109 or a spitfire. Matches remind me a lot of the multiplayer in il2. This is what world of planes should have been.
I've been absolutely smashing this for the last week or so. I hate PC gaming with a passion usually but was persuaded to give it a go. Unfortunately due to my hate of PC gaming I'm playing on a s
tey laptop at minimum graphics. The game is that good I am now looking into a gaming PC or laptop.

How is it with a stick? I've tried a gamepad but mouse seems to work a lot better. I will have to try it later with a proper stick and realistic model.
I'm going the Russian route purely because of the old IL2 days.
It works great with a stick. Just remember to turn on the realistic flight model. I'm going the Russian route purely because of the old IL2 days.

Though I understand that unless you go full realism, the mouse control is better.I can't be bothered setting up my joysitck and the head tracker so stayed away from the full on simulation so far.
I also like that you can leave battles in progress without penalty. makes the arcade mode proper casual.
I'm going to need a new joystick for this.
It looks and sounds great. Reminds me of the old days of playing Combat FS.
I tried it with a PS3 (DS3tool-xbox360) controller and it just wobbles too much when you're trying to make a sensible manoeuvre. Most of my landings I've ended up sideways and without a wing.

Is there a list of ports that need to be open?
I've downloaded it but when I try to log in I just get an authentication failure message.

How do you "pick" the match of the planes?
I got to level 2 with the Brits, and unlocked the Hurricane which seemed to put me in WW2 arenas (ie, everyone was in Spitfires, Hurricane's etc). However, even if I pick a basic Bi-plane, it still bungs me in games with other higher-spec planes so I get mullered.
Can't see any way to "chose" though. Does that mean I'm stuck at that point, so those basic planes become pointless?
