Can someone explan rfactor
Discussion
Hi Guys,
After trying to install GT Legends on my new computer which it then crashed because its not designed for Windows 8, I'm curious what this rfactor thing is I keep seeing things about.
Can someone explain the general gist of what it is and how it works? Also is there somewhere you can download endless tracks and cars from? Do you have to be online to play even if just time trials?
Sorry if I seem a bit simple, but I've been absent from PC gaming for a while but hoping to build a full size car simulator in my garage.
Cheers
Jonty

Rfactor as a base game to be honest ain't that good not that any cars etc to play with. It mostly relies on mods made by the community and there's a lot of leagues ran with it. Depends what you want to do really, do you just want to mess around with single player or get involved in online league racing? http://xtremerpm.org/ is the league am running currently in the WEC we have a race today at about 1pm which will have a live stream and commentary the link is http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x10urip_live-chan... have a look see if it tickles your pickle, if not theres alot more mods out there and leagues to run

It's got to the point where rFactor itself isn't much of a game and is more just an engine and a very basic base mod that shows what it can do functionally. It's all the mods and addons that really make it what it is, which is nigh on anything that involves tarmac and 4 wheels. After trying to install GT Legends on my new computer which it then crashed because its not designed for Windows 8, I'm curious what this rfactor thing is I keep seeing things about.

http://www.rfactorcentral.com/ was always the source for cars/tracks and mods I used as it's relatively organised.
You don't have to be online, but you're best driving on your own or online as the AI isn't great imo.
That's for the original but don't forget there's rFactor 2 as well http://rfactor.net/web/rf2/. The graphics are a big improvement and the old Formula cars are bloody good fun to drive for a simulator. It's been a while since I was on either but I must have lapped the ring 100's of times in the original.
Oh and if you have GT Legends you'll seriously want to install the HGTTC mod (for rFactor 1) http://historicgt.fr.yuku.com/ it uses files from the GT Legends game so you'll need the CD. It's mega

Cheers for the replies guys. Just been watching some of that live race.
I'm wanting to use it more as a simulator more than anything for when I have friends round. But then would like to have some decent race sessions online too once I've got the hang of it.
The add on tracks and cars sounds like what I'm after, do you know if they have a Ferrari F355 Spider? I'm trying to modify a games steering wheel to effectively clip onto the cars existing wheels and pedals, then dangle a screen on the front.
As for GT Legends, I loved playing that game and was really excited about getting back into it this weekend, but it crashed my new computer when I tried to install it. Its a laptop running Windows 8. Done a bit of a search and some say it requires a patch but that there isn't one yet? Any tips on ways around getting it working? I daren't try anything else as I've just had to reinstall all of my programs on my laptop since it crashed.

Tried Windows 8 compatibility mode for things designed for older operating systems? - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/get-a...

Thanks for that, will give it a go!If that doesn't work it might be an issue with the Starforce Protection that it uses - http://www.star-force.com/support/users/windows8/
There's an upcoming sim called Assetto Corsa that has an official Ferrari license, not sure if they will include a 355 though.
The physics of their previous sim was IMO the best of any I've tried, and AC will have laser scanned tracks too, it's worth having a look.
