Hi everyone,

The wifi internet in my new student halls is only set up to support PC and smartphone connections, and wont accomodate the WPA/WPA2 protocols for a console connection. The ethernet port in the room doesnt appear to work at all.
Now, I did some reading up and it appears you can connect a ps3 by piggybacking a pc that has 2 different internet ports (eg 1 ethernet port and one wifi card, such as mine). Now, I plugged it in with a cat5 ethernet cable and basically trial and error'd my way through the custom connection settings on the ps3, somehow it worked - I had the internet back on the ps3 for all of one evening and it showed up as another, unknown network connection on my network and sharing centre on the computer When i tried to connect again the following day, it wouldnt work - the ps3 kept saying "plug in ethernet cable" so presumably the laptop was refusing to recognise it.
Googling some more, it turned out that whilst it may occasionally work on a cat5 cable, it will only work properly using a cat6 crossover cable. So, I went and bought one and tried again. It still won't work at all. I have followed several different guides on the internet - some say to select and create a bridge between wifi and ethernet, others say to simply enable connection sharing on the port that is connected to the internet. Others say it should all happen by itself.
Either way, nothing is working whatever way i try to do it, and I am still second guessing which setup options to choose when it comes to setting up the ps3 side of things.

So, can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong and why it wont work? Being unable to get onto the ps3 network is driving me up the wall!

Thanks,
Matt

1. Yes, you'll need a Cat5e (or Cat6) crossover cable if you connect directly from PS3 to PC.
2. You'll need to select "Share this internet connection" from your PC.

3. There's a guide here on how to do it:
