What is a Nintendo 2DS? Or would an iPad Mini be better?

Is is it just a DS that no longer folds?

I'm thinking of one for my 7 year old daughter but also wondering if an iPad mini would have the longer lifespan due to internet connectivity, able to watch films etc.

The 2DS is just a 3DS without the 3D or clamshell design. it still plays all the same games.
