While waiting for x rebirth to come out and the misses being away for the week i have the house to myself and a stupid amount of hours to waste! Can anyone suggest any decent space games to play? Already done Eve, X3 and my fave freelancer. Anyone know of any others i should give a try? Cheers!

Do strategic ones count? Try FTL or Oolite.

Sins of a Solar Empire?

You might be interested in Star Citizen which is in development and looks promising.

If you like the trading thing, and can deal with retro and terrible, terrible plots / acting - then Tachyon is good (for a bit anyway). One of those where you;re a freelance trader / fighter type, ahving to get missions / bounties to buy more untill you;re hard as nails.
I was working through it between x wing vs tie fighter an Alliance coming out, didn't bother once Alliance hit. Come to think of it, I've not played that for years, might have to go dig the old joystick out of the loft and bullseye some wamp rats in my T-16...

If you can find it for a few quid, 'Nexus: The Jupiter Incident' is quite good as a space battle sim, the followup was terrible, but Nexus isn't a bad way to spend a few afternoons.

X Wing Alliance - it's the latest (and probably the best) in the series of proper space games based on Star Wars. By "proper", I mean like a fighty flight sim, rather than the utter cack that is Rogue Squadron, which was like Starfox, only stter.

The series is:

X wing (dos)
B wing (dos, slightly shinier version of X wing with 2 new planes etc)
Tie Fighter (dos, best gameplay, but really terribly dated now)
X wing vs Tie fighter (win95, first with skirmishes etc, single player was a bit gash but the multiplayer bit was well impressive in it's day)
X Wing alliance - graphically / sounds the best, good skirmishes, and has a reasonable storyline. In fact, if you do get on with it, the final mission is just ACE the first time you play it.*

  • being an 80's child helps, I grew up with Star wars at christmas, it may have infected my inner geek a bit too effectively).

Have you tried Starlancer?

Free space games are pretty good still if you can get them to work smile

Star Wars the Old republic is launching a new PVP starfighter game next month (or at least next month if you have a subscription)

Might be worth a look but it has no PVE element to it so don't go if you're looking for that

It shows its age now (just checked - its 14 years old... Jesus...), but Freespace 2 was one of the best space flying shooter type games ever. The storyline is fantastic and the scale of the battles really made it - dogfighting around with other fighters while massive capital ships knock lumps out of each other around you - one of my favourite games ever.

Well worth a look if you can get past the clunky graphics.
