As the next generation consoles will be released shortly and the current crop have given us some amazing titles, I thought it would be good to see what your highlights of this generation have been. Open to all formats, what is your top five and overall game of the generation?

Mine would be:

1. GTA 5 - A phenomenal game, pushes the current consoles to the limit and they're really going out with a bag. Best game of this generation? I think so!

2. Metal Gear Solid 4 - I'm a big fan of the MGS series and 4 was excellent.

3. Forza 4 - My favourite racing game of this generation, very enjoyable which is what you want really.

4. Portal/Portal 2 - Loved them both, genuinely individual game with a sense of humour.

5. Skyrim - Must have put over 100 hours into Skyrim and enjoyed it hugely.

So, what about you?

Red Dead Redemption - flawed but brilliant.
GTA V - pretty much perfect.
COD MW - first FPS game I really got into, it's a shame they haven't really innovated much since.
Super Mario Bros Wii - who needs fancy 3d graphics and millions of features when there so much great gameplay!
Deadspace

That's the only games that really spring to mind, I thought that Grand Tourismo was soulless and ultimately boring, Hitman was depressingly poor which was a shame because the previous gen ones were my favorite non-GTA games. Mariokart Wii was ruined by needing to steer by tilting the controller .

Agree with Portal 2...played it in "co-op" mode with my 9 year old son through to completion.

Also a fan of MGS series

Agree with Red Dead Redemption being a highlight - in fact having played RDR to death and still working through GTAV, I'd say RDR is a better game at this point. Much more immersive and the story is one of, if not the, best I've ever played.

For me it has to be...

Battlefield Bad Company Two with the PS3 clan
Battlefield 3 with the PS3 clan
Racing in the PHPCCs on GT5. GT5 was what you made of it. Great stuff Colin.

RDR was really good, but the world (obviously) felt a lot more empty than GTA5. The main story of GTA5 feels like it is over too soon, but is a masterpiece in terms of the immersive realistic world and level of detail.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 I played quite recently. 2 had an interesting story and a real feel of influence and decision paths, though the bulk of the shooting felt a bit dated and repetitive.

Fallout 3 is easily my highlight. I loved everything about it, RPG aspects, great atmosphere, huge world, scavenging and surviving.

Struggling to order, but going by the number of hours I've spent on them...

Halo 3
Borderlands 2
Red Dead Redemption
Burnout Paradise
Gears of War (the trilogy)

Honourable mentions: Alan Wake, Tomb Rader, Arkham Asylum and Cty (haven't played the new one), PGR3, Kameo, CoD - Modern Warfare series.

Demon Souls
Dark Souls
Braid
Journey
Thomas was Alone
Limbo

Ni No Kuni was pretty special as well. Spec Ops The Line, even though I didn't really like it as a game as it had pretty generic mechanics, I liked what it had to say on the ultra-realistic modern military shooter.

The Walking Dead telltale game as well, even though it's not much of a 'game'

Call Of Duty Modern Warfare
The Last Of Us
Gears Of War (brilliant online system which kept you in the action constantly. None of that lobby bks.)

There are plenty more but those are what come to mind initially.

First mention has to go to Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. I went into game not intending to buy an Xbox 360 that day, but the graphics alone made me buy it. Not a great game, but it was a highlight as it was jaw droppingly good looking in early 2006.

In no particular order.

1. Bioshock - There was nothing like this game in 2007, that was a real game changer.

2. MGS4 - Too many reasons. The nostalgia generated by playing as an older version of a character you've grown up with since the PS1 days is brilliant. Great gameplay, great story, great characters, great music and the best final boss battle of any game.

3. Fallout 3 - Because of the story and the level design. I found that really gripping and for its time (2008) I think it stands up against Skyrim.

4. Heavy Rain - Mostly because it's unique, but it had a great story too and was pretty emotional.

5. The Last of Us - Like Uncharted but without the boring and constant shoot outs. Awesome characters, pacing and of course graphics and design.

6. Little Big Planet - Because it brought multi-player gaming back into the living room. Had a lot of fun with my friends playing this.

7. Team Fortress 2 - Brilliant fun. Valve at their best.

8. Portal (the first one). Completely unique, so it deserves a mention. Portal 2 is better but the first game was the real 'wow' moment.

My favourite out of all of them is MGS4 though. Perfect.

Great thread especially since many aren't going to make the jump to a One or PS4 yet.

Red Dead Redemption was cinematic genius and incredible fun.

GTA V has just been complete and Inalready want to wipe all of my save games and start again.

Skyrim was and still is amazing with so much depth and content I could keep playing it well passed the main storyline.

Uncharted 2 had a great story and lots of variety.

The Walking Dead made me 'feel' in a game much more than any other.

Limbo made me jaw drop.

COD due to the superb story and action.

Another vote for RDR from me. Someone above mentioned the land feeling empty - I agree with that, but I sort of think that was the point. It's one of the only games I've played that's made me want to visit a placesmile

I don't seem to have as much time to play games as I used to, so I've still got MGS4 & Skyrim sat there waiting to be played! Started both but not properly got into them yet.

GTAV goes without saying is very, very good.
