Games console for the nippers.
Discussion
We're just surrendering a bedroom to our children as a playroom, with TV, and want a games console. I'm guessing the options are PS or Wii?
It needs to be something they will enjoy but as importantly something that is going to be easy for me to set up and keep control of. I am made wary by a recent tablet acquisition which resulted in a great deal of input from me as various companies tried to gather data or sell stuff using underhand methods (in app purchases etc) even when I thought I'd covered all bases.
Advice appreciated on what to buy.

Thanks.
My son is (just) 6 and loves his Wii. A lot of the games are just "pick up & play" which makes it a lot easier for them to get on with playing. I had an emotional moment a couple of weeks ago playing Mario Kart with him - he beat me properly (i.e. I didn't let him win) for the 1st time
There are a couple of "Diego" games as well which he quite enjoys as well as Angry Birds etc.
After asking a very similar question I got a second hand Wii from game.co.uk because
a) the mini one has less ports / backward compatibility
b) the U costs more
It came with a cheap copy controller which don't last, so I bought two official Nintendo ones from amazon.

Sounds like we need the Wii. There seems to be a standard one and a mini one and a U, which variant do we need?
Think they are stopping production of the original wii soon. The u is their new generation console and really is the way to go now the graphics are miles better plus there are soon pretty good titles out/coming soon.Got myself the zombie game for when they are in bed.
There you go.

Don't buy the Kinect car game though as it's rubbish. Our Wii has not been turned on in the last year.
You need a little more space with the Kinect though

Stick with the Wii for now, there's a huge back catalogue of games for it and they'll be nice and cheap. If they really enjoy it then you can look into upgrading it in a couple of years.
The Xbox 360 is good, but there aren't nearly as many kid friendly games for it and the kinect has perhaps one or two good games that utilise it.

Definitely wii. Much more family friendly and means they don't have to sit on the couch to play it. As mentioned there are also a ton of cheap games. I wouldn't bother with the wii u just yet as there isn't a big catalogue of games yet and they can be pricey as they are all quite new
Have a look on Ebay for 2nd hand Wii games - you can pick them up for £5 or so delivered & for that money it doesn't matter if they are a bit garbage. We've just got the lad a Sonic game for less than that & he thinks it's ace.
Don't forget that at that age, they aren't bothered about what FPS a game runs at, or if it is in 720p or not or if the graphics are up to GTA5 standard - they just want something fun to play. Also, their attention span isn't massive so a full blown strategy game or RPG won't interest them as much as driving a go-kart and throwing bananas at another go-kart.

I've got a wii u for the kids, got the Mario pack for £199 had a go of one in the shop and it's good fun. Itching to play it but it's from Santa.
How can you possibly be sure of a smooth operation on Xmas day if you don't extensively test the product before handing over to the the sprogs? You're doing it for the children.
