For me it has to be the last of us. Never in a game have I felt so emotionally attached to the characters I've been responsible for. It's also genuinely terrifying when you're walking around and you start to hear clickers walking about! The games also full of little moments that make it seem somewhat more thought out than any other game IMO. The scene where the giraffes appear, the part David plays and the bond between Joel and Ellie. The developer also felt no need to hold back when it came to killing off main characters either, and the room I was in became very dusty within 15 minutes of picking up the game! It's the must have game of the last generation IMO!

Red Dead Redemption was incredible. In my opinion it's considerably superior to GTAV, which I got bored of rather quickly after completing the main story and I wasn't too fussed about online. I only really enjoy racing games online. GT6 is shaping up to be the best racing game. Far better than GT5 and much more realistic than Forza 4. No livery editor, dodgy graphics in places and the occasional duff sounding car (some sound epic) but PD have nailed the physics this time, and it's so bloody huge and well thought out.

Totally agree with OP comments on The Last of Us. I've not been as emotionally connected to a game since bring terrified playing Doom. The Last of Us was genuinely heartfelt, frightening, thought provoking and had a lasting impression.

Close seconds are GTA V, Skyrim and Minecraft.

GTA5 for me, it's a stunning looking game considering it's on pretty old hardware now, closely followed by Metal Gear Solid 4.

Last Of Us or Mario Galaxy 2 have definitely been the best games of the last gen for me.

Is 3DS last gen?

If it is then Zelda Link Between Worlds takes the top spot, but on full size consoles I would probably give to to Last Of Us.

In my top 5 games of all time, I wasn't sure if it was going to be my sort of game, but fell for it big time and thought it was superbly executed.
I loved the first Resi evil, the first MGS but as they became more 3D and cinematic I thought they lost it, so was worried Last Of Us would be more of the same, but no, it was the first game where I didn't even mind the cut scenes, and the first game where I was genuinely itching to hear more of the story unfold.

A game that has made everything else look a bit st though.

Oblivion for me, I must've put about 500 hours into it. Skyrim is a good game by its own merits, but next to Oblivion it's a sack of ste.

GTA5 and I would suggest Far Cry 3, totally took over my life briefly. One of the only games I have completed twice.

Mass Effect series
Uncharted 2
GT6
Last Of Us
Dead Space
GTA V
Skyrim
Fallout 3

I can't pick from that lot, probably Skyrim for the sheer scale.

I'm tempted to say Mass Effect but not sure what to pick out of the three in the series. So I'd have to say Fallout 3. So many great games this generation. And I still haven't played GTAV and I'm tempted to buy a PS3 just for The Last Of Us.

For me it's a tie between Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

If a (single player) sequel to either of these was released on the next gen consoles tomorrow, I'd be straight down to the shops to buy one. And probably booking a week of work to boot.

Bioshock 1 or Bioshock Infinite was the best 3rd party one IMO.

Couldn't have put it better myself. I would also throw in Red Dead Redemption to finish the top 3

Seems a shame to leave out the likes of Uncharted, Heavy Rain etc...but we have really had some great stuff over the years!

Last of Us, Far Cry 3 and Gears of War are all honourable mentions, but my personal favourite was Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Have played it through a couple of times now and each time I find something new (and I'm a thorough gamer!).

Last of us (by a country mile)

Then:

Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Trials 2 HD
GTAV
LA Noire

Probably loads more that I loved over the past few years

All great single player games mentioned so far but for me the stand-outs have to be the Halo series for the 360 (except for ODST) as it featured a superb single player experience with some stunning AI and a great online Multi-player experience

On the PS3 I'd have to say it was Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare (Cod4). The first to feature a decent levelling up system, customisable gear\guns\perks, great maps and well balanced perks\guns\killstreaks and this game ate 2 years of my life.

Halo and CoD4 online where stand-outs for me as online FPS games had really been a PC forte till then but these games really brought FPS multiplayer to the console masses.

Fallout 3
Far Cry 3
GTA5
Deux Ex : Human Revolution

Definitely my top 4. But I couldn't choose one over the other.

For me it was Red Dead Redemption. The graphics were superb, the sound/music suited the game, the gameplay area was huge & the story was superb with an unexpected twist.

I'm not a "multiplayer" player - for me, gaming, like wking, is a solitary experience.
