After playing games like Far Cry 3 and GTA5 (PS3) where pretty much anything is possible and you can complete the story in your own way at your own pace, I found myself frustrated playing Battle Field 4 (XBone) last night.

It starts off and your straight into it, no tutorial or guide, I find myslef constantly flicking into the menu to find the controls. I navigate through the early stages and slowly I get to grips with it. The game looks stunning and the physics seem spot on. Even the story line seems pretty good I'm just not bonding that well.

I then find myself becoming more and more frustrated, why? Well the simple answer is I cannot do anything the way I want to do it, the game rail roads you throughout and it pushes you into obvious contact hot spots without allowing you the ability to use your brain to beat the level instead. It seems this game is all about your reactions and everything comes at you 100mph, loads of enemy - kill them, behind you - loads of enemy - kill them and so on....... I appreciate this may be great for some, but its not my cup of tea (I assume Ghosts will be similar).

Also the fact that I don't like the "go hard, die and go again" attitude means that I don't really like on-line play. As sad as it sounds I like to treat FPS as real as possible so dying is a real issue for me. I was the same playing C&C, I never built units and sent them into battle like lemmings, I planned and slowly chipped away taking as little risks as possible.

I loved Hitman (although not FPS) and Far Cry 3 was for me one of the best games on the PS3. I loved observing the camps and then plotting my way to kill all the enemy without being discovered, then when the st hits the fan, find cover and get into a full blown gun battle, I loved the way it would change from a "Hitman" style take down to a full blown gun battle because you had not observed a certain guard for example.

I have a PS3, XB360 and XBone and open to any suggestions anyone has. I will also be getting a PS4 next year so any upcoming/current game suggestions for that will also be appreciated smile

Have you tried "the last of us" yet? I've not played it (only have Xboxes) but its seems to have been hyped as the best game of the PS3 generation.

If you like open world type FPS games, they give Fallout3 a try.

If you like fantasy too, then Skyrim is also good (same developer, it's basically FO3 with dragons and magic spells/swords).

Presume you've played Half-Life and Half-Life? They're old games now, but were/are genre defining.

That looks similar to FarCry so on that basis is a great recommendation.

Fallout 3 seems to be suitable although I do prefer them more "realistic" and less sci-fi. Same goes for Half-Life.

A friend tried getting me into Skyrim but dragons and magic is not for me, I like to be engrossed in a game and I can't see magic and the like doing that frown

The Last Of Us is a much better game than Far Cry 3.

But totally different; it's not an open-world sandbox game like FC3, it's more linear but still a very, very good game.

OP I'm of the exact same outlook as you; I don't like being pushed along, forced to take the path the game has pre-programmed for me. However there are very few (good) options; Fallout 3 is one but I never got to grips with it. Far Cry 2 is good but you might find it frustrating and lacking after enjoying FC3 so much. Red Dead Redemption is good; not sure about Just Cause as I've never played it but I hear it's ok - maybe worth a punt second hand. Dishonoured was good as well, although it is a little linear. Never played Assassins Creed but quite tempted.

Agree with the sentiment; So very bored with basically playing between cut-scenes - Uncharted 3 was the last of this type I played - I just can't understand their popularity, there's virtually no meaningful interaction.

As alrady recommended Red Dead Redemption is a great open world game, better than the GTAs in my opinion.

For something a bit different and a bit more cerebral, have a look at Dishonored.

Not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but I really enjoyed it.

I'd definitely give Fallout 3 a try. I don't play shooters online either as the shoot, die, repeat thing doesn't interest me and I'm not in to SciFi games really either but this is easily in the top few games I've played. I'd say it was more post-apocalyptic than scifi anyway.

You can pick it up for a fiver pre-owned so not the biggest loss if you decide you don't like it.

I'd also say Fallout New Vegas is probably slightly more 'realistic' and larger but the story isn't quite as good as Fallout 3.

Or as suggested above, for a bit of realism, Red Dead is really good.

I found FarCry 3 was pretty good but nowhere near as immersive for me as any of the above if that's what you're after.

I'm the same, absoultely detest anything 'fantasy'. Hvaing said that, I was lent a copy and it really is a properly amazing game. Perhaps not for the tactician though.

Forgot to add, Deus Ex Human Evolution is definately worth a look; it isn't a sandbox game however each mission has several ways you can approach it, either stealth, rambo or a mix - it's one of my all time favourite games.

I think Crysis 3 might be just up you street OP. it's not the greatest fps but looks good and encourages you to think and tackle situations in your own way.

EFA.

The Battlefield series was never about single player. I wish they'd just ditch it and do it like they did for BF2 (essentially you against bots with no storyline). BF3's story was so confusing I ended up just killing enemies without really knowing wtf was going on. I say confusing, it just didn't engage me so I kinda zoned out during the cutscenes.

I have to add, even though someone else said it, Dishonoured.

its a brilliant game, with great layout.

you can approach missions or kills or even how to get to your target from totally different angles.

you can complete the level without killing anyone but the target (if there is one) or go all in and kill every last person, but the more people you kill, the more rats turn up.

also, fallout 3, a brilliant game that will forever be etched into my mind.
I will never forget when i was working for GAME a couple of months after it came out. this woman came into the shop and traded it in, saying "i though it was going to be a good game were you get to shoot stuff and do missions out in a giant field, but all you do is live in a vault"

silly woman hadn't even finished the character creation part before getting out the vault and was trading it is lol...

im guessing she's the sort of person with a very short attention span who needs action in her games from the second she starts playing it.

yeah, so get that one too.

Basically anything Bethesda make is like that I loved Fallot 3, New Vegas and Skyrim, I was too late to the party to get into Oblivion though.
