Hi,

Looking for advice and opinions...

We're thinking about getting our two boys a console for xmas. Now, the eldest has asked for a 360 due to his addiction to Minecraft however, I have the (perhaps naive) concern that I'm buying an "old" console and he'll be banging on about the One in a few months plus it will blow up within a month because it's "old technology".

On the other hand, the 360 is very much cheaper... bearing in mind we're talking about two youngsters, not teenagers. Plus it has Minecraft whereas I understand that the One has a TBC delivery date for Minecraft.

So - will I regret buying the 360 if that's what I go for? Has it got plenty of life left in it? Will my boys be beaten up at school for having an old console (I jest, they're nails).

TIA!

Don't waste your money on legacy kit. It's already bad enough having a 360 and wondering whether I should bother buying games because they'll be junk when I eventually have to upgrade, but spending money on an already replaced console that people will stop writing for in the next few months? Yeah, no thanks.

Sorry but that statement is nonsense, they only stopped making the PS2 in 2010 I think and some companies continued to make games for it until 2011, Plenty of life left in the old dog yet, I am not buying a xbox one until its been out at least a year so the developers have a chance to make the most of it

They are 7 and 5.

There is a huge back catalogue of games that will go down in price over the coming months / years and will provide Xmas / Birthday present opportunities for many years to come.

Get them the 360 and use some of the cash you save to buy a bucketful of games they will enjoy.

IMHO

Aye, because all the games kids want to play were released for the PS2.

Get the xbox360. There is a huge selection of games suitable for your kids, and a lot of it for very little money. Give them Minecraft, and any of the Lego games and they'll love it. If you bought the xboxone it'll be months before there is a range of games for your kids, and they'll be twice the cost.

What you spend on a 360 now will likely be how much cheaper the xboxone will be in a year or two time anyway, so you'll be no worse off.

For that age I would definitely get the 360. There are hundreds of good games that will be nice and cheap for a weekly/monthly treat from Game.

The Halo games are good for kids IMO smile

Thanks all. The consensus pretty much concurs with my feelings.

I don't think you are able to follow the logic in my statement

Last year I bought the 360, an LED 23" screen with built-in speakers and an HDMI cable connector.
My boys are 7 and 4 and love it.

The 7 year old started on Minecraft and progressed to Lego and is now on Halo 4 and Grand Theft Auto (with the sound turned down for expletives). he has mentioned the ONE but the games are £50-odd so it's just not worth it. It will probably cater more for the 18 plus titles anyway which is where the money is.

My old X-Box games play on the 360 so I don't see why the 360 won't play on the ONE.

Well they won't.

Sony are no different, PS4 will not play PS3 games either.

If either the PS4 or X-Box One played the previous console games then I would have certainly bought one of them (more likely both).

S'cuse me jumping in here, but my (very, very soon to be) 10 year old son is asking for an Xbox One, although he has a 360 Kinnect. I have said I'll look into it, on the basis that he sells the 360 to fund the exchange if it goes ahead.
I am concerned though, that it's peer pressure and bragging rights more than a technology upgrade. He plays Minecraft and Forza 4, etc but because F5 is now out for the Xbox One, I think that's fuelling the request.

So, along with the Landlord, upgrade or not?

Because fast PowerPC processors can't be emulated on lower speed x86 chips. It just doesn't work. It's not spite, or bitterness, or forcing you to upgrade as the uninformed bile-spouters will try to have you believe, it's not physically possible. Simple as.

Even more reason not to buy one then.

I've owned an xbox for years but I can't wrap my mind around the "4GB" thing. Is this storage space? I've "installed" GTA V yesterday and I thought it took up about 8GB!! How does this work?

A downloaded game soon is over 1GB, can't see 4GB work if it's truly the storage space.

As for the purchase of a 360, I'd go second hand without a doubt. Many will offload theirs with a number of games and a couple of controllers/kinect for peanuts. Look for the best offer for £100, and if you buy an XBone in a year, it'll be down by that much.

Hmmm - I'd be worried about no warranty and the old ring of death that I've heard about :/

Often wondered about this. My 2005 original X-Box is still going strong though is lightly used.

RROD is all but gone, devices that had the fault have been replaced, have a 2005 model still going strong.
On the other hand, people are offloading theirs with games, keep in mind that a new game costs about £50, and even older games go for £20.
If you're thinking money, it's hard to ignore a good second hand buy.

That's more reassuring. I just assumed that it was something they couldn't do anything about so all consoles are subject to RROD.
