Over xmas I found myself getting quite into this game (having never played any of the DR series before, though did download DR2 under the "games with gold", just not got round to playing it).

Love the combo crafting, some really great ideas in there with excellent animations tyo the actual combo/super combo tools keeping the kill style variety going well enough to keep you hooked.

The only negative comment I have is after reading so much about how DR3 removes the previous games issue with being 'on the clock' due to having to get Zombrex, I still feel there is too much of the timed element to the story mode, particularly on the side missions.

The "X days until the bomb drops" thing is all well and good for story, but the open world style is so well done and so deatiled I want waaaaaaaaaay more time to just explore and clock up my combo killl scores - the side missions timer is also any annoyance.

If you use the smartglass companion I find it stacks up the side missions way to much so you can end up with 3 or 4 coming in at once , a mess of mission markers on screen and not enough time to get them completed.

Anyone else playing it?

Yup, great fun imo. Couldn't agree more on the time element, I just want to fanny around killing zombies in all manner of ways but when you get into the story it is quite good.

Like the fact that unlike other zombie games if you aren't prepared it's actually quite easy to get overwhelmed due to the number of zombies coming at you. The level design is well thought out in that respect - you get stuck in a store with 200 zombies fighting their way in, they'll usually be a back room window or something to escape through.

Steamroller & motorbike combo is great biglaugh

I enjoyed it even though I didn't like the previous ones, purely down to the time constraints as you mentioned.

When the game first starts it does seem to force onto you that there is a time limit. This made me concentrate on the main quest and I ended up at that first 'boss' battle with the biker gang very early on, which I found hard and frustrating. I got fed up with the game at this point thinking it wasn't any different to the other games. I didn't go back to the game for a week or so until I'd read (somewhere) to ignore the timer.

Game save deleted and started again, I found it a much more enjoyable game. By the time I'd got to the end I'd explored everywhere and found the vast majority of collectables and weapon blueprints. There is easily enough time to do everything in the game in normal mode (hardcore has the strict time limits).

And some of the weapons did give me a chuckle

I'm enjoying this immensely. I would go as far as to say it's one of the best games I have played in years.

Regarding the restructured game modes, 'Story Mode' is the basic mode which you're supposed to start with. Once you're done with that, 'Nightmare Mode' is the place to go for classic Dead Rising thrills. It's set to a strict time limit, and in keeping with classic Dead Rising tradition, you won't have time to do everything so you have to prioritise what you want to get done. Similarly, gameplay stats are tweaked to make it more difficult and I think the restriction on save points exists there too. I'm looking forward to getting started on it as I love that classic DR gameplay, though the Story Mode still presents a fantastic gaming experience. There is much joy to be had in discovering new areas and exploring. The joy of finding a grenade and a shotgun together and making a grenade launcher is undeniable!

It's a technical tour de force too. Every time I start in a garage I tend to make a turret truck and drive around slaughtering a few hundred zombies with the massive roof mounted shotgun (infinite ammo!). The game's ability to handle massive crowds of zombies, especially when you're tearing them to pieces with 5ft long cannon and blowing up petrol drums in their midst as you go is incredible. There isn't a hint of slow down.

I also love the fact that the combo system has been revised to allow you to create combo weapons wherever you are. No longer do you need to collect two separate items and take them to a bench to create a combo weapon. So now, you don't need to carry a couple of combo weapons for boss fights and stick mainly to base weapons as you had to in previous games. That is a huge step forward.

I'd say it's the first 'must play' of the new generation of games. Ryse is probably the 'prettiest' in isolation, though I still think DR3 is the most impressive graphical achievement. Forza looks amazing, and Killzone looks nice too but the gameplay is fairly staid. DR3 is the first game to really feel 'next gen'. Compare it to DR2 and Case Zero that were up for free download on Xbox Live a couple of months ago; whereas they felt a little hoary then, they were definitely adequate and still made for fantastic playihng. Compare them to DR3 and they look utterly prehistoric!

Oh, and the Smart Glass companion is essential. I played some of the game without it and thought there were very few side missions despite collecting loads of little app updates in the game. It was only when I activated the app that I realised how much content it actually adds to the game. What a remarkable implementation of the tech.

Same, some of the added bonuses like air strikes are great.

Yes, the Fallen Eagle DLC is out today, the download includes that, I think, and other tweaks. It's a monster update! I've currently got it going at the moment. It wouldn't surprise me if more than one DLC package was contained in that code, to be locked off until the official release date.

I'm looking forward to having a go with this, a new vehicle in the DLC. It looks even better than the shotgun truck!

I just wish they had made it more difficult' it's incredibly good fun but it's very easy. Still though, one of the best games I've played in a long while!

Been playing this the past week but I've now lost count of how many times I've fallen through the ground, every few minutes the game freezes for a split second and objects suddenly appearing and disappearing. The sad thing is I'm really enjoying the game on my second play through doing all the PP trails but these problems seem to be getting more frequent. frown

I've found it to be very stable and bug/glitch free, which is impressive given it's sense of scale and the freedom it offers the player. The only bug I've found so far is one where, if you're selecting an item from your inventory as you take damage or get staggered by an enemy, the item will show up as a selected but your hands are empty and you use the hand to hand combat moves. Reselecting the item cures this. It may have been ironed out in the update though.

I thought the same when playing it on the first play through but it's becoming unplayable now. Had it completely freeze twice earlier and lose everything I'd done since the last save.

From a quick search it seems to affect people playing the digital version.

I've played it through fully a couple of times on the disc version and had no issues. Evening off tonight, so zombies and a couple of cold beers are beckoning!

Just wait until you start getting some of the explosive weapon combos. Sticky bombs, propane bombs and my favourite, the meat bomb! The meat bomb is made with a hunk of meat (so basically a severed zombie hand) and some dynamite, though once you've unlocked the explosive combo shortcuts you can make it with a grenade or firework and a hunk of meat. When you throw it, it draws in a massive crowd of zombies and creates a massive explosion, it's extremely impressive to watch.

I've completed Dead Rising and the free intro to Dead Rising 2. I am yet to complete number 2. Without giving up any spoilers is it necessary to play No 2 before 3?

Thanks.

No, not really. It will help you make sense of the plot in DR3, particularly some of the later chapters, but it's hardly essential. It is very good though, so worth playing before DR3.
