....as per title.

Mine threw a major hissy fit last night froze-up and gave the THREE BLEEPS on shutdown then entered SAFE MODE when switched back on! had to do a system scan/restore and reboot so I think it is on the way out.

Thank you in advance

AFAIK the hard drive is linked to each specific PS3 so you can't swap them out easily (or at all). At least that was the case when I had my phat PS3 about 3 years ago.

You can, that was one of the advantages of the 360, you can also do it with the PS4 you just need to either fully backup everything onto a external HDD and then install the new one, or just copy your save games onto a USB and download the firmware from the PS website and install it.

incorrect, youll find any 2.5 hdd will fit in a ps3 up to 500gb, you have to install the OS from usb stick which you can download from the playstation store. you have to boot the playstation in safe mode and update from there, similar fashion to the ps4.

OP to be honest by time you have spent buying and installing a new hard drive you would be better off buying a slim ps3 new or used.

Does this happen while playing Gran Turismo 6 by any chance?

I'm having the same issue with mine and it's doing my nut in. I think it's a cooling issue rather than hard drive issue. Theres a big thread going on about it on a playstation forum I think and as yet no solutions, should be able to find it via google.

It's annoying as it randomly happens, making me not really want to start a race that will take an hour as on the 59th minute it could just turn off and I've wasted an hour of my life! shame.

Chaps have a look at these links if you suspect its GT6 causing it:

I'm not sure if its the same method as the fat model, but I ran out of space on my 250gb slim. I changed it out for a 1TB drive. It was really easy. If I can do it, Anyone can!!

Cheers all, I just bought a Slim instead.
After what happened on Skyrim (See Skyrim thread) last night it sounds like it is not the HDD causing my issues.

just seen your skyrim comment. it could be a cooling issue. you should look on youtube for fan cleaning video, the ps3 is famous for clogging up the fans with dust.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago. No need for a USB stick this end, the ps3 itself formatted and installed the drive on first boot.

I suspect whether it's required will be a differentiation between the various different models and revisions.

Totally painless exercise. In stark contrast to the 360.

hmmmmm not liking some of the opinions of doing that though.

I'll take the outer casing off tonight and clean it out properly.
If that cures it I'll get monies back for slim.

Thanks

I changed my HDD when GT5 came out, cost £20 for a 500gb HDD and took about 10 min to swap over. Much better than the silly money MS charged for the 360's HDD which is just a bog standard drive.

I got the 3 red lights on my old fatty when playing a game. Wouldnt boot or anything, apparently the GPU solder joins can break up and you have to reflow the board.

Tool it all apart as per some youtube vid, got the motherbaord out, wrapped its delicate bits in tinfoil and popped into the oven for 10 min. Put it all back together and hey presto as good as new smile
