Internet speed for gaming

I mainly play Cod on PS3 and ive noticed the last few weeks im getting loads of lag while playing. Never had any issues before on Ghosts. Its starting to p1ss me right off now.
Did a speed test tonight and im getting 4.76Mb/s download and 25.78 upload. The phone exchange is about 5-10 min walk from my house so id think I should get good speed. I should be getting it faster than that shouldn't I ? Sky is my provider.
Would you think this is causing the problem ?

Is that kbit/s or Mbit/s?
If it is kbit, then no wonder you are lagging, that is dial-up speed. If it is Mbit, then that's the mother of all uploads and totally disproportionate to the download speed.

So I presume it's either my download speed or I'm having bad luck and getting in games that whoever the host has a poor connection or something
out of interest I've not looked into ping and such like just hooked up a Xbox or PS3 and played it.
just used Speedtest.net and go Ping 8Ms downlaod speed 25.34Mbps and upload at 2.34Mbps upload. not bad as i'm on 20 meg broadband
how good is 8Ms ping when it comes to online gaming and why do this make the difference?

But to get a real idea you need to be pinging the actual game servers you're connecting to.Ping is a measure of how long it takes for a packet of data to be sent to its destination and to get an 'received' response. The reason it's so important is that while you're playing the game, the computer is continually sending data about what you're doing - running, shooting, camping like a little girl
. It's also sending you data about the actions of other players. If your ping is high what you see on your screen will be slightly (or very, if your ping is really lousy) out of sync with the actual position of your opponent. In other words, a better ping aids accuracy In the good old days of dial-up, a ping of 500ms wasn't unusual and you got used to adjusting for it and shooting where the other guy would be in half a second.

Personally I wouldnt say that over 50ms is difficult to play. I play on my phones 3G connection which offers me around 100 ping on most games. This is perfectly playable.But as others have said, for gaming download speed and upload speed isnt nearly as important as your ping. You should try pingtest.net (or whatever its called) and check for packet loss, this could be your problem.
Ping/Jitter are more important than pure bandwidth/speed.
Most non-locally hosted games only really require 2ish+ Down and 1 up.
Run a pingtest.net (Sister company of speedtest), which will give you a much more accurate description of your network performance.
After that, port forwarding/DMZ/router settings can also get you some gain.

Already done port forwarding etc. Most non-locally hosted games only really require 2ish+ Down and 1 up.

Did several ping tests last night got a average of 65 so that should be ok.
Didnt have any lag last night so maybe i was just unlucky with the games i got in and had bad connection
Very odd DL/UL speed ratio? Normally it's 10:1 or 2:1 is the lowest I've seen it! And that's with people who opted for a higher UL speed for online gaming (Not sure about PS3, but xbox live depends on the UL speed for uploading data whilst playing).

Is your low DL speed not due to throttling by your ISP? Either you've exceeded your ghost cap on your download limit (read up on 'fair usage policy' if you've been told you have an unlimited download plan - you probably don't) or are they throttling during peak times? (what times were you playing?)

A ping time of 8m/s is, as has already been said, very good, but that was a one off snapshot, a graph taken over 24/48 hours will show you if your connection is stable. It also gives you the opportunity to share your graph by posting a link where others could help pinpoint any problems.
