Watch out, State of Decay - the phenomenal PC zombie survival sim DayZ may be about to make a move on Xbox One. Creator Dean Hall has apparently been talking the situation over with Microsoft, though he's unable to confirm anything as yet.
If you're new to DayZ, it's a multiplayer-only ArmA II mod in which players explore a fictional, 225 square km former Soviet state, now overrun by the living dead. Brutal realism is the order of the day - you must scrounge constantly for food, equipment and water while fighting, avoiding or (rarely) making peace with other survivors.
"We'd certainly consider release on any feasible platform with a realistic publishing model," Hall told Gamereactor in a new interview. "It seems like currently both of the next-gen consoles should provide an environment we can develop inside."
PC remains Hall's platform of choice, but he thinks Microsoft and Sony are on track to offer a compelling alternative. "I personally feel the new consoles have yet to prove themselves able to rival the PC experience, however I feel there is the potential from both."
"I've not personally had the opportunity to view the full details of the PS4 whereas I have had the opportunity to talk extensively with Microsoft. The next-gen consoles show very exciting promise. I'm hopeful that they can deliver on that.
"An important part of that, from my perspective, is encouraging and supporting third-party creative development to bring the 'edginess' of PC creative development into the console," Hall added. "I think if the role of Kinect/voice expands to where it is desired it could do some awesome things. I just think it's too early to say at this point."
It's possible that Hall has applied to Microsoft's ID@Xbox program, which allows registered developers to self-publish on Xbox One. The list of ID@Xbox applicants runs into the "thousands", according to Microsoft, and you can expect the first ID@Xbox games by March 2014. Not long to go then.
In other news, the next State of Decay is likely to be a massively multiplayer experience, like DayZ. Assuming Hall's game does indeed come to consoles, I wonder which will prove the more popular contender?

This is promising, I hope the graphics are better than the PC version but it's a great concept and could turn out to be a lot of fun.
Having seen BF4 on all three platforms (PC, PS4 & XBone) I don't think the graphics will be as good on XBone, let alone better.But... If the gameplay and movement is there then it will be awesome on all formats

When you're talking about 3 games that are developed concurrently of course the PC will have the best graphics. However, we're talking about a potential new development based on an old PC game with pretty poor graphics. Striking the balance of size for the game and graphical quality will have to be considered.Mastodon2 said:

Striking the balance of size for the game and graphical quality will have to be considered. Will the graphics on the XBone version be better than the old ARMAII based DayZ... maybe but only depending on your PC. My PC isn't the best you can get but does have a pretty good video card. Even the resolution I run the current DayZ in is beyond the reach of the XBone and PS4 (ie beyond 1080p with loads of cool lighting effects, particals etc).
Don't get me wrong, I want the new stand alone development to look better than the current version and will be interested in seeing it both on PC and next gen console. If they can make the stand alone console version of DayZ look as good as the PS4 version of Battlefield4... I will be happy as larry (whilst being aware the PC version will look better).
As far as blanace goes though... the PC version (and PS4 for that matter) of BF4 does look better than XBone with loads of graphical features enabled that the XBone cannot handle. They didn't downgrade just because one format could not keep up. I don't expect them to do that this time with DayZ either. Balancing doesn't sell games... massive graphical "WOW" and gameplay does (but unfortunatly it's mostly the graphical "WOW" these days)

The engine is old and not well optimised, it's more CPU than GPU intensive. It's something they are looking at with the stand alone version: https://mobile.twitter.com/rocket2guns/status/4335...I haven't played DayZ in over a year but TBH the graphics were not on top of the list of things that needed improving for me. Zombies clipping through walls, the clunky interface, ladders(!), etc, were much more important to improve. It's not really a game that needs Crysis or Metro rivalling graphics IMO.
I assume that the CPU intensive engine will be ably handled by the XB1 hardware; otherwise Hall wouldn't be entertaining talks over a possible Xbox release. Graphically, it looks pretty awful in places. And littered with bugs. And punishing. And difficult and unforgiving. But I do so want to try it out.
Hopefully the jump to XB1 will focus the development team on smoothing off those rough edges, like the woeful hit detection. It should make for a more playable game, in any event.

went on it for a bit on saturday to see how the development was going. No farmable wild life, combat is still crap (as per arma) and zombies dont even as much as pause for a door or wall now it seems.
Played some more Loadout and Feed the Beast instead.
They still haven't fixed the free roam zombies? Dear god that was a bug/feature in the standalone about two months ago. And to think I paid £20 after being told it was 'awesome' and I only found a game that was severely broken. Apparently that was 'OK' because it was a paid for Alpha. It seems the devs are more interested in getting it on XBone than actually working on the game people have paid to 'be part of the development of' or to test the game and pay for the privilege!Played some more Loadout and Feed the Beast instead.
Well, the developers did note on Steam that if you paid your £20 to download DayZ, you were essentially paying your way into an early alpha version. So a console release will probably be the best thing for DayZ, and it will hopefully see the title polished into something that really works, rather than just being an intriguing and often sloppy bug-fest.
