Exactly the same happened to mine the other week..so I stripped it down to clean any dust out of it and found none...
It can't be a cooling problem with yours (same as mine) so it won't be worth you stripping down to investigate as I found out.
I found that after trying to restart it about 10 times it will work and reboot but I think it's going to be time for a new machine..
The problem is it's still a couple of hundred for a ps3 with a decent size hard drive and my machine is an ancient 40gb early George Foreman grill lookalike ..
I don't know if it's a coincidence but I found that my machine only started playing up once I bought GTA 5..
I think as it's an old version of ps3 maybe it was working the processor too hard..

You could try the heat shrink repair I guess but it does mean stripping it completely down so be careful when taking the ribbons out ...
You will have to buy some heat shrink paste to do the repair but I wouldn't hold out much hope that it will work..
There's also the hair dryer repair which you can look up on you tube..

I followed this guide here: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-fix-a-YLOD-...
Fixed my 40GB PS3, long enough to get all my save games off, but ended up getting a newer one last year. You could fix it then at least trade it in as a working PS3. I've fixed one for a friend too and his is still playing fine over a year later.
I even managed to get a mention in our work's magazine as we do thermal modelling software

8hrs?.!I take it you did the quick high temp bake after as well? How did you apply your liquid flux? I used one of those flux pens initially, which worked, but not for long, so I ended up getting a proper bottle and syringe setup so that I could get the flux right into where all the major components needed it.

Shutdown on me the other night and went to standby.
Now when power on it comes on for 2 seconds then goes off and then the red light goes on and off constantly.
Ideas how to fix?
If dado, how can I get the data off the hdd onto a new ps?
(caveat; I know almost nothing about PS3s but....) Now when power on it comes on for 2 seconds then goes off and then the red light goes on and off constantly.

Mine packed up recently, when I tried to turn it on the green light would come on for a second, then it would go out, beep three times, and then the red light would come on and stay on until the power was turned off.
I replaced the power supply with a £30 eBay job and it's been right as rain since. Easy job too, no special tools needed.
Does my one's fault description match your's fault?
I would take the PS3 to a repair specialist or a decent independent computer shop may know. The latter should know how to repair that problem, it is very widespread sadly. Even if they don’t appear to repair consoles, you might be surprised at what they can do…
£70 to £80 would probably be a realistic repair cost, that is around what my local repair shop charges for console repairs.
Your data should be fine if you get the console repaired.
