My PS4 died last week due to update v1.7 so a new one will be on the way once the watch Dogs bundle comes out. In the mean time I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive. Even having the old one for 6 months almost 300GB of the available 500GB was taken so it's probably a good time to put in a decent sized drive.

I looked at one which was a 2TB drive but it looked like there had to be a knack of turning the PS4 off and having to leave the PS4 in sleep mode. Is this the case for all larger hard drives? Is there a list of high compatibility drives or anything of that nature? Does anyone recommend one that they're using>

On another note. I've not dealt with Amazon returns before but have had to with a couple of products over the last few weeks & I've got to say I'm well impressed with how they handle things. Hats off to them.

Cheers.

I put one of these in

Seagate 1TB 2.5 inch Laptop Solid State Hybrid Drive by Seagate http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BHRWHNI/ref=cm_sw_r_...

Not had any issues with it at all.

Thanks. Looks like the one to go for after reading a small hand full of reviews. The 2TB looks to have a steep price increase so the 1TB is probably the best option for now.

What's a Hybrid drive?

It's a traditional HDD with a small Solid state portion as well. It's faster than a traditional HDD and cheaper than a full SSD.

You'd already filled 300gb?!
This might sound a dumb question (I don't own a PS4... yet) but what with?

Do the games take up a lot more space?

All games are available for download. A lot of the bigger ones are around 40/50GB. I doesn't take to long to fill up.

Thanks for that, interesting finding out this sort of thing before I take the plunge.

Thanks Mister V, fingers crossed they're just as reliable. Suppose I could buy a caddie for old PS4 HD for extra (& much needed storage) smile

Yes AWRacing, it will be filled up in no time. I only have a few games and the rest are the freebies. One of the freebie games was only about 8-10GB, never really played on it then 1 day it required over a 6GB update. Obviously it got removed. It will be no time before the 1TB will be full too, hence me scanning around for a 2TB. This is all without the use being able to store Music, Photo and Video files onto the HD too (hope they sort that out soon, it's been 6 months!)

Can the ps4 take advantage of the high speed (7200rpm) normal hard drives? I know the PS3 couldn't. If they can't take advantage of a 7200 there is no point putting a SSD in there.

I couldn't answer the 7200rpm question (can't see it having any problems with them though) but here's a website I've just been looking at which shows a few stats and comparisons. According to this the website the standard HD holds it's own seemingly when it comes to BF4 and CoD.

Is the above HD SATA III 6Gbps? Can't see the specs for it.

Looking on ordering the below caddie for the PS4 hard drive. I can't find the exact hard drive Sony are using to get the dimensions and I also didn't realize there are different height hard drives either. So (another) question is, would the PS4 hard drive fit in this caddie?

I've not had the chance to use a PS4 yet, but is it possible to set it to use the SSD portion of the hybrid drive for the OS?

Also does the PS4 use it's HHD as a cache like the PS3 does?

I'm struggling to see the benefit of a hybrid - is boot time much of a issue with a console?

Unless I've missed something obvious you're looking at the wrong thing. If it's like the PS3, or indeed most PC / Laptops / Servers you'll simply unscrew the existing HDD from the caddy already installed in the PS4 and insert the new HHD in to the same caddy before installing it in the PS4 - that's not a caddy, that's just a box that sort of makes an internal HDD a portable / external HDD.
