Only a couple of weeks until this game launches and it's in open Beta now.

I'm really looking forward to it. It's full of fun and humour and the game seems well balanced. Not tried PVP yet and only just joined a guild so not done any group content (other than open world stuff) but so far so good.

Anyone else looking forward to it or putting it on their "to buy" list?

Played for about an hour this morning.

Hmmm... It's competent enough, but it has some serious flaws.

1) The combat, it's biggest selling point, is difficult to control efficiently. Real time action combat while using the age old MMO control scheme, not a good set of bedfellows. Without some serious key config playing around, your left hand has to move, dodge, sprint, jump and attack, all at the same time. Even with my gaming keyboard addon with thumbstick for movement, it was still a bit of an arse.
2) The UI is just awful, and the current set of mods don't fix that enough. Dialog boxes, cues, quest boxes etc... all just seem to pop up at random locations on the screen,
3) The whole environment of the game is also very messy, too busy, too garish, difficult to see what is going on or where you need to be. Coupled with the locations being generic and uninspiring, I just had no real idea of where I was in the game.
4) The storyline may be good, but like the rest of it, it is poorly presented and incoherent in the main.
5) Unexplained gaming mechanics. I'm a seasoned MMO'er, I know how they work. Yet I had no idea what I needed in terms of stats for my character, or what to do with the stuff I picked up, or what all the "path" nonsense was about really. I can go and read online what I need to focus on for my medic, i'm sure, but that should really be explained in the game itself.

Granted I'm still very low level, and apparently it gets much better past L15, but i'm not sure i'll bother getting to that point.
If it was free, then it would be a great free mmo, as you can look past those flaws.
Being as it costs £40, plus £10 a month, it really needs to be a lot more polished than it currently is. Let's see what the final product is like, but it is certainly not a pre-order for me!

I'll reply to this, just to balance things up for any people considering the game. Trooper, this is in no way a pop at you mate beer :

1)The controls take some getting used to and customising to achieve the fluidity you require, but I'm very happy with mine now. I rebound dodge, turned on 'hold to continue cast' and bound my most used ability to my middle mouse button.
2)I've not had any problems with random locations of pop ups, but I agree the quest part of the UI is chaotic. There are addons that fix that until Carbine do.
3)I'm not sure I understand this criticism other than cluttered and it might be subjective. It has always been very clear to me what's going on and some of the zones later on are great.
4)I only play games for competitive PvP with some PvE thrown in, so I have no idea about storyline.
5)I don't know how to write this without sounding as if I'm being aggressive, but if you're a seasoned MMO player they really aren't difficult. To someone who is unfamiliar with MMOs I can see how they could be really confusing, but if you've played MMOs before they are pretty intuitive. The only thing worth noting is that stats vary from class to class, so 'Brutality' may do one thing for one class and something different for another.

I'm hugely impressed with Wildstar. The PvP is fantastic and arena is very entertaining; I've missed competitive PvP. The game is hard and that - for me at least - is another great feature. Carbine are also the best team of devs I think I've ever come across; their motto 'the devs are listening' is completely true and they are very active on both their forums and on the sub-Reddit.

1-15 is really rather boring and that is a criticism I've made many times. It just gets better and better from then on and the challenging instances are really worth a punt. If everyone judged WoW on 1-15 it wouldn't have sold 1/10th of its copies. I'm not saying pre-order it if you weren't feeling it, but I wanted to voice some pros for it as I've racked up far too many hours in the beta. hehe

(If anyone has any questions, I might be able to help.)

I loved this "Top 5 reasons to get Wildstar video" pretty much sums up all that I like and enjoy about the game. I'm even excited about the PVP and raids as I've never played this sort of MMO in such a way as to get into them but there's something cool about both designs that I'm drawn by

My mates just cancelled his ESO already for it, I just cancelled my ESO also yesterday but I'm not sold on Wildstar yet.

I really hate the control for it as well, its an unfixed camera with hotbar keys at the same time as free aim attacking, it's way too fiddly!

ESO and Wow are one or the other but Wildstar have just done it all at once.

Edit:

Just read Troopers post and realised you have the same issue, I also agree that on screen there is to omuch going on and it is too clustered all the time in every zone.

The game does look good and there is alot to do, I like the idea of proper raiding as well.

There is already an addon to fix that, to make it more like ESO or Tera. I think it's called Steer but I might be wrong.

I read something about that, didn't see any reviews about how well it performs though, I think it auto sets the camera behind you and basically follows you.

Re the screen - I took off the majority of the NPC names bars as I also found that was too cluttered. As soon as I did that it was much easier to navigate / make sense of what was on screen.

I have a Razer Naga mouse so haven't had the issue with control as the action keys are all under my thumb but I guess I can see where you're coming from if you're using the number keys

Just gone Free to Play this week with a veritable fkton of improvements and Quality of life changes as well.

Once the initial surge dies down next week (servers struggled this week under the strain) It's a significantly improved game. Still bloody fun and funny!
