How does one become good at playing death matches etc?

Completed Max Payne 3 and now trying my hand at the multi player - I get killed with amazing regularity. I don't even get shots off. The others seem quicker and have far better weapons....I'm getting a tad angry and annoyed at it !

Am I just a grumpy old bugger who should leave multi player alone? I think this may be the option !!

Its like getting to Carnegie Hall...practice,practice,practicesmile
Learn the maps by hear, stick to a few favourite weapons, have a good net connection, and remember you are playing against 14 year olds in their bedroom with no life,so just enjoy it even if you die all the time.
I don't know about teams in Max Payne, but a good friendly clan always helps.

Believe that if it makes you feel better, but I'd say the majority of skilled players are 20-30, and being good at a game doesn't mean you have no life, it just means you're good at a game.

The tips are accurate though, it's how everyone starts. Learning maps is usually the key.

Depends on the game, generally being good involves a good setup, knowledge of map layouts and pinch points as well as wide areas you're going to get picked off etc. some tactics and learning how to lead people on into traps and to your advantage.

It differs between game genres though on the specifics.

i'd say 50% of any persons skill is down to net connection.

they can see you on their screen before you can see them on yours. puts you at an instant disadvantage!

The difference between someone in the UK and a user in the mid to east US is about 90-100ms, which is pretty marginal but given nearly every multiplayer game these days has fairly significant compensation for 'lag' for that very reason network connections are not much of a factor these days if any.
Gone are the days of having to lead a users character by varying amounts dependant on their geographical location.

I watch my son play Battlefield, COD, titanfall etc, I see a target and he's already aiming and shooting it. I've played these games for decades but he's just simply better at processing what's going on than I am. hehe

He regularly comes in the top few places and he's only 9.

Obviously knowing the maps and spots to camp or shoot from makes a big difference.

Can be. Quite often for me I am killed by someone who isn't even on my screen. For example they have come through the doorway I am looking at, have seen and shot and killed me. THEN they appear on my screen.

The other day I just started firing through a doorway, someone was then dead on the floor in the doorway, they had never appeared my screen but I got a lucky headshot on someone unfortunate enough to have walked in at that point. I never saw them on their feet, just the body.

And the number of times I go into a room for safety, sit down and start to reload but then suddenly drop dead from the person who was shooting me earlier is beyond belief.

My internet speed is around 3.5mpbs.

Tbh on games like cod the best thing to improve was to slow down my gameplay.
Most people belt right across the map at the start or into areas where enemy may be willy nilly.

Slow down and let the cannon fodder be killed and find out where the enemy are, don't go for a headshot always aim for the chest.

Or just sit on a rock with a sniper well out of the way! wink

Thanks all - I don't understand why they have better weapons. I'm guessing there will be a system whereby the more you kill you unlock weapons. My web connection is good - maybe their's is better ?

IT seems even when I'm firing with a Kalashnikov at them they only need fire a hand gun once at me and I'm a goner !!

I will practice....I hope the force is with me...eventually !!

Cheers all.

Where are you aiming? Body mass, head or just at them generally? Most games headshots kill quick/instantly and that's probably where they're getting you.

But yes it probably has some kind of progression system whereby you upgrade to different weapons.

There are plenty of people who record and upload to YouTube when playing games, it might be worth you taking a look and watching some of them. It means you can get some tips and hints from someone who's probably played many many more hours than you have or even will tongue out

Never thought of that.

TBH I'm not aiming anywhere specific...just trying to hit them before I get my one hit....never bloody works !!

Cheers

Try playing team games instead of individual deathmatch if possible. Learn the maps, play to the objectives and LISTEN. Sound is critical, some of these guys will hear you coming before they see you. If they know the maps as well there is a good likelyhood they can predict where you will pop up. A few speculative at a doorway and it's game over if they get it right. Try to be unpredictable.

Whilst Max Payne 3 is very very good, it's not a popular game so I doubt you'll come across anyone other than avid fans of the game on the multiplayer and as such you might struggle against more seasoned opponents.

I've not owned a COD since Black Ops 2 but I currently play BF4, Warface, GTA Online and doing well has a lot to do with a few things; learn the maps, play in a group (even just 2 of you will do much better than on your own) and play regularly.

I'm don't do as well as I used to though, I'd like to think it's because games are made to be 'fairer' these days and offset any natural advantage you have but it's probably just that I don't put the time in.

I get a few hours a few times a week whereas when I was at uni I'd spend 4-5 hours a day on COD4, MW2, Black Ops, BF3, GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption (and Homefront randomly but it was actually a laugh). I had the time to put in and tore teams to bits. Certainly on Black Ops there are still a few clips online of me getting 120+ kills in a game of domination, or getting a dogs killstreak (8 kills) in about 30 seconds or getting two nukes in one game on MW2. Certainly there became a time that I was playing so regularly that my reactions became like a reflex, you know where people are likely to be and find yourself aiming even before you'd thought to do it.

I don't think I can do that any more, just because I don't have the same time to put in, to make it feel more of a natural reflex.
